Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide students from low-income communities with a quality 21st-century education that is rooted in the arts of technology, preparing them for lifelong success.

About This Cause

Since 1992, we have brought artists into the classroom to use creativity and technology to make learning in all subjects more engaging and accessible. We’ve won multiple federal awards to research, develop, and implement a range of innovative arts-based programs to meet a variety of student and teacher professional development needs. Innovation insights gleaned from these federal grants have shaped our current program offerings. With a budget of $8M, Urban Arts now serves students in grades K-12 with a particular focus on high school education, college access and career preparation for college-aged Alumni. Our School of Interactive Arts uses the art and science of game design to teach students computer science, coding, critical thinking, art and design. With both in-school and after school programming, students can earn up to 600 program hours with Urban Arts. Collectively, our students have earned more than $12 million in merit scholarships to colleges around the nation including NYU, USC, Columbia, Fordham, RIT and more. Our goal is to send graduates to the college of their choice for as little debt as possible. To achieve this, Urban Arts employs dedicated staff that provide private school level college access offerings. Our graduates (94% Students of Color; 50% young women) are going on the change the face of the tech and creative industries. In order to support our graduates during their college years, we hire them as Assistant Teaching Artists to educate younger cohorts of students and help us develop more cutting edge curricula. Our corporate partners volunteer to provide critical mentorship, career access and internship access services to our advanced students and Alumni. Recently, Urban Arts was chosen by the NYC Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment to build the first four year public option game design curriculum at City College of New York. Launching in Fall 2023, this new college degree will attract students from Title 1 public schools across New York through a feeder program also hosted by Urban Arts via our Gaming Pathways initiative. Urban Arts has begun a national expansion in North Carolina and has set its sights on markets such as Chicago, Atlanta and Los Angeles.
