Mission Statement

Committed to the transformational power of the arts, The New 42nd Street builds on the foundation of seven historic theaters to make extraordinary performing arts and cultural engagement part of everyone’s life. The New 42nd Street fulfills this purpose: • through The New Victory Theater, New York City’s professional theater for kids and families, presenting the highest quality performing arts at affordable ticket prices, providing model arts education programs and youth employment opportunities. • by maintaining and fully using the New 42nd Street Studios and The Duke on 42nd Street to support performing artists in the creation of their work. • by continuing to make 42nd Street a lively cultural and entertainment destination, and ensuring the ongoing vibrancy of 42nd Street’s historic theaters: Apollo, Empire, Liberty, Lyric, Selwyn, Times Square and Victory.

About This Cause

THE THEATER YOU NEVER OUTGROW “The New Victory has radically altered the very way we think of children’s entertainment ... the New Vic’s essentially reclaimed kids from decades of saccharine, intellectually offensive offerings. This is theater—in the widest sense of the word—that’s challenging for all because it doesn’t talk down to anybody.” - Elisabeth Vincentelli, Sunday Arts Welcome to The New Victory Theater—a place where storytellers reign alongside daredevils, puppets, rock stars, break dancers and—most of all—kids. Since The New Victory Theater opened its doors in 1995, it has become a cultural home for the youngest of New Yorkers. For many of the almost 2 million people who have passed through our doors, The New Victory marks their very first theatrical experience. In 2012, The New Victory Theater received a special Drama Desk Award for “providing enchanting, sophisticated theater that appeals to the child in all of us, and for nurturing a love of theater in young people.” We've traveled the world to bring more than 250 shows from more than two dozen countries to our stages, presenting the very best for New York's most imaginative audiences. Many shows that were first brought to NYC by the New Vic have gone on to Broadway and additional Off-Broadway runs, and toured the globe to great acclaim. Tony Kushner, Neil Armfield, Moises Kaufman, Julie Taymor, Mabou Mines, Julian Crouch and Phelim McDermott, and the late great Maurice Sendak have chosen The New Victory to present their works, along with the Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, the Guthrie Theater, the National Theatre of Scotland, the Young Vic, the Royal Opera House and Kneehigh Theatre. The multidisciplinary and international productions on New Victory stages inform and inspire the work of the award-winning New Victory Education Program through a dynamic combination of school and public programs. Our school programs serve 35,000 Pre-K through 12th Grade students and teachers each season at almost no cost to the kids or their schools. Many of our partners are NYC-area Title I schools, with a high percentage of students who would be unable to experience live theater if it weren’t for The New Victory. The enthusiastic young people who greet you on your way into the theater are part of the New Vic Usher Corps, a 3-year program that provides 27,000 hours of paid employment for 75-80 high school and college-age youth each season. Families who attend the New Vic together pair their theater-going with New Victory Family Workshops as well as in-theater exhibits and arts activities. Together, these nationally-recognized programs exemplify the New Vic’s long-standing commitment to the intrinsic value of cultural participation in the lives of young people and families. “Playful, urbane, witty, smart, world-class, imaginative and quirky”—these are some of the words that our adult patrons use to describe the work that they experience on our stages. “Awesome, the coolest, rad, fly” and just “wow”—this is what we hear from kids. By introducing young people as young as four months to the exceptional work, we begin to instill in them a life-long love of the arts. By keeping our ticket prices ridiculously affordable, we help make it a habit.
