Mission Statement

The New Group is an artist-driven company with a commitment to developing and producing powerful, contemporary theater

About This Cause

The New Group is an award-winning, artist-driven company with a commitment to developing and producing powerful, contemporary theater. The company maintains an ensemble approach to its work and an articulated style of emotional immediacy in its productions, while seeking a theater that is adventurous, stimulating and most importantly "now," a true forum for the present culture. Established in 1995, The New Group is celebrating its 25th Anniversary during the 2019-20 season. The New Group has produced over 70 theater productions featuring some of today’s most compelling performers and writers, receiving over 150 nominations and awards including the 2004 Tony Award for Best Musical (AVENUE Q). This 25th Anniversary Season is the largest artistic undertaking in The New Group’s history, featuring four world premiere productions that serve as a base for our education and outreach programs to offer deeper engagement with the work. 25th ANNIVERSARY SEASON The 25th Anniversary season began with CYRANO, a musical adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s classic drama featuring a cast of 12 plus 5 musicians. Adapted and Directed: Erica Schmidt; Music Aaron and Bryce Dessner (both of the Grammy Award-winning band The National); Lyrics: Matt Berninger (of The National) and Carin Besser; Choreography: Jeff and Rick Kuperman; Sets: Christine Jones and Amy Rubin; Costumes: Tom Broecker. With Emmy and Golden Globe winner Peter Dinklage in the title role and Jasmine Cephas Jones as Roxanne, Ms. Schmidt’s adaptation introduced a new generation to the passion and wit that make CYRANO an enduring classic. The second show was one in two by Donja R. Love, directed by Stevie Walker-Webb, with Jamyl Dobson, Leland Fowler, and Edward Mawere. Sets: Arnulfo Maldonado; Costumes: Andy Jean. one in two experiments with form and storytelling for an intimate and humorous examination of the social and emotional effects of HIV on Black gay and bisexual men who continue to grapple with stigma and silence from their communities and society at large. The New Group partnered with National Queer Theater for outreach and engagement. The third show is the musical BOB & CAROL & TED & ALICE directed by Scott Elliott; Book: Jonathan Marc Sherman; Music and Lyrics by Duncan Sheik; Additional Lyrics: Amanda Green; Choreography: Kelly Devine; with Jennifer Damiani, Ana Nogueira, Joél Pérez, Duncan Sheik and Michael Zegen. This adaptation of Paul Mazursky’s 1960s film about marriage and intimacy during the 1960s sexual revolution explores society’s often-contradictory impulses around love and fidelity. The final production of the season is THE SEAGULL/WOODSTOCK, NY, Thomas Bradshaw’s daring new adaptation of Chekhov’s classic drama, directed by Scott Elliott. Set in contemporary Woodstock, NY and employing color-conscious casting, Mr. Bradshaw’s adaptation revels in the limitless capacity for emotional terrorism that we find in family, love and art. NEW GROUP/NEW WORKS: New Group/New Works play and musical development program focuses on the nurturing and development of new work, and emphasizes the building of lasting relationships with artists. It serves as a vital incubator to create a pipeline of new work by emerging and established artists. Every production in the current season was developed in New Group/New Works. The New Group’s Reading Festivals provide emerging and established playwrights to observe the impact of their work on a live audience. The reading festivals are free, open to the public and widely publicized through our email list of over 38,000 active accounts as well as personal outreach to industry professionals, agents and literary managers at other theaters. The work is explored for possible inclusion in The New Group’s future seasons and to bring the work to the attention of other theaters. EDUCATION The New Group education programs provide opportunities for middle and high school, college and adult students to experiment and take risks with forms of theatrical expression in an environment of trust and collaboration. We seek to share theater with communities across New York City and train and mentor the next generation of actors, playwrights, arts administrators, and audiences. The education programs include: • Scene 1, a free after-school program for NYC high school students • Free dedicated student matinees for NYC public high school students • New Group Next, an internship and paid fellowship program • A new BFA program in Acting in partnership with LIU Brooklyn • A tuition-based playwriting course Scene 1, is The New Group’s free after-school program for NYC Public High School Students with priority given to students who lack access to the arts. The semester-long courses meet weekly after school from September-December and January-May and follow the NYC Department of Education’s “Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Theater.” Scene 1 introduces students to basic theater concepts and practices, and emphasizes social-emotional learning. Each semester culminates with a free performance of devised work by the students. The New Group also offers a summer Vacation Camp. The Scene 1 Summer Intensive runs for three weeks in July and is organized to provide students with fun and exciting opportunities for growth while providing positive-relief for working parents. Recognizing that rising ticket costs can be a barrier to entry, we offer a free dedicated student matinee, including a post-show talkback, of all content-appropriate productions in the season. Prior to the performance, teachers and students are given study guides that explore the cultural and historical events in each production; introduce members of the creative teams and production crews, providing insight into the work and jobs behind a professional theatrical production; and contain questions for post-viewing discussion. In addition, all Scene 1 students and our college partners are offered complimentary tickets to our annual productions. New Group Next, The New Group's internship and fellowship program mentors students and early career professionals interested in exploring careers in arts administration and/or nonprofit theater. Cross-departmental exposure provides a grounding in theater administration, helps our interns and Fellows build their professional networks and further their career prospects. The New Group has three paid Fellows for the 2019-20 season in the areas of Accessibility, Inclusion, Diversity, and Equity (AIDE), Artistic, and Marketing who come from communities that are underrepresented in the arts and are part of The New Group’s effort to create a more diverse and inclusive organization and industry. In Fall 2019, The New Group and LIU Brooklyn welcomed the first class of 14 BFA students in our program, Acting for Theatre, Film & Television. Three times a year, two tuition-based playwriting classes are taught simultaneously by professional playwrights over ten weeks. Several students have had their plays included in New Group/New works reading festivals offering another avenue for artists to hone their craft and develop their ideas. ACCESSIBILITY, INCLUSION, DIVERSITY, AND EQUITY (AIDE) The New Group is committed to building a more diverse and inclusive organization to reflect broader perspectives of thinking and experience. AIDE initiatives impact artistic programming, audience engagement, hiring practices and education initiatives. The New Group is dedicated to nurturing a community where all collaborators are valued, heard, respected and empowered. The positive results of these efforts are designed to diversify The New Group and the greater theater community. The intentional initiatives listed below form the basis of our AIDE work: •New Group Now: Where Art Meets our Present Culture is a series of panel discussions that bring together artists, thinkers, experts and advocates to address issues at the center of The New Group’s productions within the larger social and cultural context of US and/or global society. New Group Now is free, open to the public and sometimes live streamed. •The New Group/No Limits Reading Series is part of our New Group/New Work program. Curated by playwright Thomas Bradshaw, No Limits features new and unexpected works by playwrights of color, whose work is considered “too daring or unproducible”, creating a focused pipeline of new work. The intentionality of this program remains necessary as we wide our artistic networks and send a message to the writing community that The New Group values and invests in new work by artists of color. •We collaborate with marketing consultant Marcia Pendelton to create special cultivation events that welcome theatergoers from diverse backgrounds, particularly within NYC’s African-American community. These events bring new audiences to our productions, and provide useful feedback on artistic offerings and how we convey that information. • New Group/New Audiences, a ticket subsidy program to reduce economic barriers of entry to live theater. As ticket prices steadily increase, discounted and/or free ticket offers are essential to balance out the need for full-price ticket revenue and create equity for new and marginalized theater audiences. We also have free dedicated student matinees and subsidized tickets to our ASL-interpreted, audio described and open caption performances. •New Group Next paid fellowship program, to provide workforce readiness for early-career theater professionals from communities underrepresented in the arts to participate in the artistic and administrative future of The New Group and the theater industry as a whole. We recognize that these steps are just the beginning of creating cultural equity to make our art and spaces inclusive, accessible, and open to people of all backgrounds, ethnicities, cultural and faith traditions, ages, sexual orientations, genders and physical abilities. With a plurality of voices creating and sharing this work, The New Group will build a legacy of programming and foster a culture of respect, openness, learning, integrity, honesty – and welcoming home for all.
