Mission Statement

Founded in 1979, Ezer Mizion is the largest health support organization in Israel providing support for the cancer patient, the elderly, the special child and the mentally ill. Ezer Mizion: the address for so many in their time of crisis. The cancer patient drowning in a nightmare of terror, the distraught mother of an uncontrolled special child, the elderly grandfather desperately trying to maintain his independence in spite of his frailty, the traumatized family of a mentally ill mother, the cerebral palsy young man who can only dream of what others take for granted and the patient told by his physicians that a bone marrow transplant is his only chance to live---all these, over 650,000 Jews, knock on the doors of Ezer Mizion each year.

About This Cause

In 1996, Moshe Schayek, a young man desperate for a bone marrow transplant, turned to Ezer Mizion for assistance in finding a matching donor. Ezer Mizion’s Cancer Support Division helped his family coordinate a bone marrow drive, but no match was found among the 5,000 people who participated in the drive. Sadly, the young man died, but he left a legacy that has enabled dozens of other sick Jews to live. This led to the establishment of Ezer Mizion’s International Bone Marrow Donor Registry. As of June 1, 2015, the Registry has grown to include 763,462 potential donors! An incredible 335,784 of these potential donors are IDF recruits who joined the registry following a landmark agreement between Ezer Mizion and the Israel Defense Forces whereby new recruits routinely undergo testing as part of their induction process. Since the establishment in 1998, Ezer Mizion’s Bone Marrow Donor Registry has handled thousands of search requests from dozens of transplant centers in 48 countries around the world. Ezer Mizion’s Registry has made 8,113 complete donor-patient matches that have facilitated 1,854 stem cell transplants saving the lives of patients throughout the world and sparing thousands of people untold anguish. In compliance with international standards, our Registry accepts donor search requests and facilitates transplants for all patients. Today, Ezer Mizion’s Registry is the largest Jewish registry in the world. Because donors and recipients need to be genetically compatible, patients of Jewish ethnicity will generally require stem cell donors of the same ethnic origin. The Registry is thus a vital resource for thousands and serves as a safety net for Jewish patients everywhere. Ezer Mizion’s registry is affiliated with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP, USA) and is a member of Bone Marrow Donors Worldwide (BMDW, Netherlands). Ezer Mizion’s Registry is an accredited member of World Marrow Donors Association (WMDA), the international association that sets global standards for registries worldwide. Along with cancer’s frightening medical repercussions, the dreaded disease brings with it a host of other challenges, and drains families’ physical, emotional and financial resources. The Ezer Mizion Cancer Support Division offers cancer patients and their families comfort, love and support, as well as an array of services tailored to meet their unique needs: Ezer Mizion’s Bone Marrow Donor Registry, the world’s largest collection of Jewish potential bone marrow donors, is a life-saving resource for cancer patients and others who require bone marrow transplants. Oranit, Ezer Mizion’s guest home for children with cancer and their families, is a beautiful home away from home for families battling the dreaded illness “Mikol Halev”: From the Heart provides sick children with VIP visitors, parties, entertainers, gifts, computers, and games, and coordinates unique summer and winter retreats for cancer patients and their families. Travel by ambulance is often the only option for a person confined to a wheelchair or a bed. Regular treatments or therapy require the patient to travel to the clinic and incur astronomical expenses on a weekly basis. Israel’s health insurance funds cover transportation costs only for specific types of treatments – and even then, only up to 50% of the cost will be refunded. Ezer Mizion, with its fleet of 20 ambulances, offers comfortable ambulance transport to destinations throughout the country – at no charge, saving Israel’s handicapped population millions of dollars a year. The Ezer Mizion Ambulance and Transport Division was established to allow these people to transcend their physical challenges and get from one place to another safely, comfortably and with dignity. The range of children development issues addressed is broad: from slight to very severe challenges. The professional services and care offered enable the children to advance and reach their full potential. The Children’s Division programs also help alleviate financial pressure, physical demands and emotional strain often experienced by children with special needs and their families. Ezer Mizion’s Golden Age Division empowers Israel’s elderly population – many of them Holocaust survivors – to live out their years in comfort, dignity and satisfaction. The Golden Age Division offers an array of services and programs to seniors throughout Israel, including professional home care, social clubs, a make-a-wish program, Alzheimer’s intervention, a home repair program, and more. Ezer Mizion offers a variety of psychological support services and rehabilitative programs for people suffering from psychological disorders, emotional issues and mental illnesses. These services include: A Big Brother/Sister Program that pairs individuals suffering from mental illnesses with trained mentors who provide companionship, offer assistance with basic daily function, and teach the skills necessary for independent living. Rehabilitative employment centers that provide mentally handicapped people with basic vocational training and employment, and ease their integration into free market employment. A psychological referral team that recommends appropriate psychologists, psychiatrists and counselors to people grappling with emotional disturbances, mental health issues or difficult relationships. A network of psychiatrists and psychologists throughout Israel who provide their services at a discount to patients referred by Ezer Mizion. A 24-hour crisis hotline for non-medical emergencies, including mental health crises such as suicide attempts or severe manic episodes. Food is often the last thing on the minds of individuals and families coping with illness or disability. People caring for an infirm family member can be too preoccupied to pay proper attention to eating and food preparation. Ezer Mizion’s Food Distribution Program is a huge, Israel-wide operation that provides hot meals, sandwiches and refreshments to these families, giving them the energy and physical stamina to continue caring for their loved ones. Along with the nutritious and satisfying food, Ezer Mizion volunteers also bring emotional nourishment in the form of smiles, words of encouragement, and a listening ear.
