Mission Statement

Midori & Friends harnesses the power of music to transform the lives of children and enrich their communities. Through accessible music education programs, Midori & Friends cultivates a joy of learning, a spirit of service, and courageous self-expression for all, illuminating pathways to a brighter future.

About This Cause

Midori & Friends has invested in over 330,000 students in NYC by providing tuition-free music education programs. In 1992, when Midori first began performing solo concerts at PS 160 in Jamaica Queens, it was in the hope of bringing exceptional music to students in underserved communities. Inspired to do more, she founded Midori & Friends (M&F) and now, 32 years later, that initial concert series has evolved into a leading music education provider annually serving thousands of NYC students ages 3-18 and partnering with over 60 school and community partners in ethnically diverse, socio-economically challenged neighborhoods throughout the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens. Over the years, Midori’s overarching goal has always been clear and steadfast to honor the artistry in every student while nurturing beginner musicians into well-rounded young people. Focusing on children with little or no access to the arts, our comprehensive music programs are offered at no cost to students or their families and available to all children regardless of skill, ability or background. Our professional Teaching Artists and ensembles lead high-quality, sequential, standards-based programs during the school day and after school. Our students learn to develop core musical skills, play instruments or sing, appreciate and understand a diverse range of musical genres and traditions, collaborate in ensembles and perform for their community.
