Mission Statement
Church Street School for Music and Art is a unique nonprofit community school for the arts in lower Manhattan, committed to providing high-quality art and music programs for diverse students of all ages, abilities, race, gender, sexual orientation, religion and socioeconomic backgrounds. We believe in the transformative and therapeutic power of the arts and are dedicated to providing accessibility to the arts for all.
About This Cause
Church Street School for Music and Art has historically been a hub of musical and artist training for New Yorkers for the last 33 years. Currently, over 1,000 students participate in Church Street School programs from all ages spanning the five boroughs of New York City, New Jersey, and eleven countries internationally with over 16,000 people indirectly served yearly through the performances given by school participants. The school offers scholarships to low-income students and participants of color and has a long history of serving students with special needs. CSSMA’s classes in music performance and art center on the holistic and therapeutic aspects of the arts, while providing participants the opportunity to learn social and emotional learning skills alongside improving their understanding of their craft. Church Street School provides community building activities through the arts in the presentation of art shows, performances, and community events by participants throughout the year in their Lower Manhattan location and throughout New York City. Church Street School for Music and Art has curated programming for early childhood (6 months-4 years old), elementary age (5 years old-12 years old), teen and young adult (13 years old – 24 years old), adult (18 years old and up), and seniors (55 years and up). This is unique to any other music and art school in Manhattan, as other schools are either only designed for one or two age demographics or are focused on the product versus the self-discovery process of creativity. This philosophy creates an atmosphere of accessibility and allows all students to access the arts. Students are empowered to be creators of art from an early age and are guided in their journey by CSSMA teaching artists to find their unique artistic voice. The school has a history of creating artists who make their living in the arts post-graduation. These include Julia Stiles (actress), Stella Rose Gahan (singer/guitarist), Z Behl (visual artist), Etai Abramovich (Former Drummer in the band LAUNDRY DAY), Alejandro Vilarassa Corriero (singer/songwriter), Mukundi Ramaiti (singer/songwriter), and Duncan Figurski (visual artist). We serve a range of socially, culturally and economically diverse communities from Tribeca to the South Bronx.
