About This Cause

Something Positive, Inc. is a New York City-based performing arts and education organization dedicated to preserving the art and culture of the African Diaspora and its cross-cultural influences. Established by Cheryl Byron in 1981, the ensemble of dancers, singers, and musicians have performed an original repertoire at venues including the African Burial Ground National Monument, American Museum of Natural History, Brooklyn Museum, Lincoln Center, and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture. Continuing to gather resources to institutionalize the artistic work of the African, American, and Caribbean collective, Something Positive has received accolades for incorporating culture and education with entertainment. Performances include the Marche des Arts Spectacles African (MASA) Festival, Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire; Visa for Music Festival, Morocco; Dance X, Belize; Limon Roots Festival, Costa Rica; and the Trinidad and Tobago Emancipation Celebration. In addition to high energy performances, Something Positive regularly conducts workshops at public schools and community-based organizations. Something Positive has collaborated with organizations including the Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC), Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute (CCCADI), and the West Indian American Day Carnival Association (WIADCA). The Company released the album VISION and partnered with Danny Glover to launch the traveling exhibition, The Iconography Series: Celebrating the Female Spirit – Cheryl Byron. The exhibit, which remained on view at venues including the Brooklyn Public Library and Medgar Evers College for 18 months, featured a variety of costumes, accessories, and textiles from the 40-year career of the late Rapso music pioneer and founder of Something Positive, Cheryl Byron.
