Mission Statement

The Redhawk Indian Arts Council is a not-for-profit organization founded and maintained by Native American artists and educators residing in the New York City area. Since 1994, the Council has been dedicated to educating the general public about Native American heritage through song, dance, theater, works of art, and other cultural forms of expression. The council represents artists from North, South, and Central America, Caribbean, and Polynesian Indigenous cultures. Redhawk Council produces four of the largest heritage celebrations in the Northeast. The Arts Council also hosts festivals, dance programs, music programs, art workshops, theater presentations and educational programs, addressing stereotypes and fostering an awareness of Native cultures from a historical standpoint, with a focus on contemporary cultural practices. Redhawk incorporates a traditional Indigenous perspective on sustainable living by thinking “green” and urban gardening by farming in the Council’s garden space. The Council presents programs within the educational system to help students and educators gain a better understanding of Native American history and diverse cultures represented within Native America. The Council also encourages educators to re-think the current out-dated curriculum and apply some of the firsthand knowledge shared by Native artists and educators. The Council creates venues for Native artists to share their art forms with the public and each other, providing opportunities to become financially self-reliant. By contracting artists for educational programs, lectures, and festivals for various organizations, the Council helps support the First Nations artist community. Native youth programs, hosted by the Council, educate urban Native youth about their cultures and present a setting where these youth can create a common bond. Native youth are encouraged to share and learn traditional forms of dance, music, drumming, and regalia-making, focused in keeping young Natives interested, involved, and proud of their rich heritage and cultures.
