Mission Statement

Fresh Youth Initiatives' (FYI's) mission is empowering youth who have the fewest resources to achieve their greatest potential. Our goals are to help low-income children build secure futures, lead healthy lives, and attain strong academic achievement. Founded in 1993, FYI has grown into a multi-service agency with expertise in meeting the educational, social-emotional, and mental health needs of low-income immigrant and first-generation children and families.

About This Cause

Fresh Youth Initiatives (FYI) operates year-round youth programs in Washington Heights, an immigrant community in northern Manhattan. Programs address four areas of need: (1) the academic achievement gap among Latino students; (2) navigating immigration and transitioning school levels (elementary to middle, to high school, to college); (3) mental health issues; and (4) limited opportunities to prepare for college and career. FYI’s target area was one of the earliest and hardest hit by COVID. Pre-existing conditions like housing instability and poverty increased exponentially and FYI is thus also addressing needs of the whole family. In addition to sustaining youth development and education programs, FYI launched a Hunger Relief and Social Services Department to stabilize families; we plan to continue these services indefinitely.
