Mission Statement

HB Studio is an artistic home for actors, directors, and playwrights in the heart of New York City. We are a school created by theater artists for theater artists. We believe in a process of training that is essential to all the performing arts. We offer a rigorous, well-rounded curriculum of study for committed students of all levels where the actor’s unique potential is cultivated and encouraged. We provide a haven for working professionals, free from commercial pressures. Working in partnership with the HB Playwrights Foundation and Theatre, we uphold a standard of performance that can play a significant role in shaping today’s contemporary and classical theater – a standard envisioned by our founder, actor/director Herbert Berghof, and championed by the actor and master teacher Uta Hagen.

About This Cause

Renowned Broadway actor and director Herbert Berghof founded HB Studio in 1945. Berghof, born in Austria, was a protégé of the German realist director Max Reinhardt. A refugee from Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime, Berghof came to New York in 1939, where he joined a community of immigrant artists interested in bringing the classical training of the European theatrical tradition into practice in the still-young American theater. He devised HB Studio as a place where artists at all stages of their careers could continue to work and practice between jobs, supported and challenged by their more experienced colleagues, in a space free from pressures related to commercial success. Berghof met the celebrated actress Uta Hagen in 1945 on a production of THE WHOLE WORLD OVER directed by Harold Clurman and invited her to join him in teaching at the Studio. The two were married 10 years later. Miss Hagen, author of the seminal acting texts RESPECT FOR ACTING and A CHALLENGE FOR THE ACTOR, became one of the most renowned and respected acting teachers of the 20th century. Together, Hagen and Berghof trained some of the most noted actors of the American theater. Their students, colleagues, and a new generation of accomplished artists continue that tradition today. In the spirit of its founders, HB Studio offers affordable classes in the dramatic arts for committed actors, directors, and playwrights to hone their skills in a community of peers and mentors. HB Studio fosters an environment where creative freedom prevails and artists are challenged to take their work to the next level. HB annually offers 10-week courses for fall, winter, spring, and summer terms. Master classes, special seminars, and a variety of skill-building and professional development workshops are also offered throughout the year. In addition to affordable classes and workshops, HB Studio makes limited scholarship funds available for students of demonstrated talent and commitment who lack the means to study. Scholarships are awarded based on need, merit, and recommendations. Applications for Studio class scholarships are accepted prior to each term. Through the HB Scholarship Fund, the studio helps: struggling actors get the support they need to start strong in a tough industry; life-long learners develop their artistic skills and creative projects; and professional artists maintain and develop their craft.
