Mission Statement
New Destiny's mission is to end the cycle of violence for low-income families and individuals at risk of homelessness and domestic violence by connecting them to safe, permanent housing and services. To achieve our mission, we build and manage housing with on-site services; offer innovative programs that empower victims of abuse to find and retain affordable housing; and expand access to permanent housing resources for low-income families. For 23 years, New Destiny has been the city’s leading advocate for the permanent housing needs of domestic violence survivors—and the only developer specifically committed to creating affordable apartments with services services for this population. Our unique perspective allows us to create housing and programs to help survivors transition from crisis, remain safe and rebuild their lives. New Destiny’s work is a strategy to end family violence as well as a front-line response to the city's ongoing crisis of family homelessness.
About This Cause
Our programs are: HOUSING DEVELOPMENT AND PRESERVATION is central to New Destiny’s mission. Since our launch as an independent organization in 1994, New Destiny has developed 16 residential projects in four boroughs, creating 347 permanent and transitional units. Eleven are affordable rental projects with on-site services. More than 50% of the units are set aside for domestic violence survivors coming from a New York City domestic violence shelter. The FAMILY SUPPORT PROGRAM is the cornerstone of New Destiny’s permanent affordable housing, helping previously homeless low-income survivors of domestic violence, primarily single mothers of color with one or two children. Tailored to the needs of domestic violence survivors, New Destiny’s trauma-informed service model helps tenants to remain stably housed, promotes family unity, builds community and fosters self-sufficiency. The program offers a wide range of services to more than 450 adults and children. With support from on-site staff, residents make tangible improvement to their lives such as completing their education or securing better employment. The program is a unique, successful model for delivering services that results in housing stability – over 95% of our tenants remain stably housed each year – and ends the cycle of violence in these families. The outcome is that families remain intact and children are given a chance to flourish and succeed academically. A study of the Family Support Program by researchers from Rutgers University and Baruch College found that our affordable, permanent housing combined with specially tailored services provides housing stability and a foundation that allows survivors to progress in other areas of their lives. HOUSING LINK is an innovative homelessness prevention program that is offered at each of the five borough-based New York City Family Justice Centers (FJCs). HousingLink connects domestic violence survivors who are clients at the FJCs, which serve thousands of survivors each year, to affordable apartments in existing buildings. By preventing a shelter stay, HousingLink helps survivors and their children to avoid the trauma and disruption resulting from homelessness. HousingLink conducts workshops for both survivors and advocates on housing options and rental subsidies; provides one-on-one assistance to address barriers to housing; helps individuals prepare strong rental applications; and offers aftercare support to foster housing stability. In just three years, HousingLink has connected 109 families to high-quality, affordable housing. An independent evaluator called HousingLink "an innovative, promising practice." With over 140,000 visitors annually, New Destiny’s online HOUSING RESOURCE CENTER is the “go to” resource for individuals and advocates, providing up-to-date information on a range of topics including finding affordable housing, rental assistance resources and eviction prevention.
