Mission Statement

Based in New York City, Immigration Equality is the national leader in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and HIV immigration rights. We helped end the HIV travel ban, led the successful fight to secure green cards for LGBT families, supported the recognition of a third gender marker by the State Department, and forced them to drop a discriminatory policy against bi-national children of same-sex couples, and halted the Trump Administration's "Death to Asylum" rule.

About This Cause

LGBT Asylum Program Through our LGBT Asylum Program, we represent more than 800 LGBT people fleeing countries where being LGBTQ is illegal, or fundamentally unsafe, every year. Our LGBT Asylum Program matches LGBT and HIV-positive individuals with top law firms pro bono, while our own legal team handles the most difficult cases. We win 99% of cases that close, providing more than $30 million in free legal services every year. In addition, we work with gay and lesbian families and advocate for structural change and direct representation for immigrants in detention. Our sister 501(c)4 organization, Immigration Equality Action Fund lobbies directly for immigration reform and other strategic goals that benefit LGBT immigrants. We encourage you to visit our website and learn more about our work!
