Mission Statement
Loco-Motion is a performing arts training program for children started in 1994. Our mission is to cultivate the development and appreciation of dance among NYC school-age children of all backgrounds and levels of ability. Since our inception, it has also been our mission to have at least 1/3 of our students on full-tuition scholarship.
About This Cause
Our studio is in St. Marks Church on-the-Bowery located at 131 E. 10th St in the East Village. From 3:45 - 6:30pm M - F, dance training consists of classes in Elementary Modern Dance & Composition, Modern Dance & Comp, and Dance Lab. We strongly believe that all children deserve the opportunity to enrich their lives through participation in dance. It opens them up to new forms of expression and carries them into a broader world of experience and understanding. We recognize and honor the important role that children play in the future of the performing arts, and are devoted to building a community where growth, discovery and inspiration is paramount. Classes are a combination of technical and creative exercises developed to extend the imaginative capabilities of each child, infusing them with confidence in their abilities and enabling them to grow as artists and individuals. Students develop skills and techniques, improvise, choreograph, and perform. These activities help to encourage youngsters to develop positive attitudes, refine raw talent, cultivate an appreciation for dance, and recruit future audiences. We produce curriculum and performance material that is rich in artistry, activism and intellectualism. Our young artists combine their passion for equality and justice with their love for dance, theater and spoken word. Our performances are different from many other companies in that we strive for a reciprocal experience between teacher and student, with both contributing to the creation of pieces. We are not interested in students merely memorizing what has been done before. We focus on having a shared experience with the audience as well, investigating common themes including first love, following your dreams, multiculturalism, peer pressure, and issues facing youth growing up everywhere. We have created over 100 works that address among other things: racial profiling, discrimination, women's rights, gay rights, civil rights, sexual orientation/identity, disenfranchisement, immigration, and racial & ethnic stereotyping. We are interested in helping students become global citizens and engage in the world.
