Mission Statement
The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is committed to a vision of American democracy that reflects core values of equality, freedom, and justice. Since 1995, we have honed a distinctly effective model – equal parts think tank, legal advocacy group, and communications hub – through which we fulfill our mission to craft and advance reforms that revitalize our systems of democracy and justice. Rooted in the law, we do not carry out our work under the belief that fundamental change is won only or even principally in the courtroom. Rather we focus our efforts on fueling innovative solutions – relying on rigorous research, providing high quality legal counseling, drafting, and advocacy, and generating high level public discourse.
About This Cause
Founded in 1995 by the clerks and family of the late U.S. Supreme Court Justice William J. Brennan, Jr., the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law has a vision shaped by the Justice’s credo that the law must revolve around the concept of “human dignity.” We are affiliated with New York University School of Law, a leading national law school with focus on serving the public interest; the Brennan Center is a separate and independent 501(c)(3) and receives no funding from NYU. The Brennan Center is one of the nation’s preeminent and most effective forces for democracy reform. We are a policy, research, and legal hub – working with legislative, community-based, and other allies. Last year, The Guardian called us “the foremost non-partisan organization devoted to voting rights.” We believe that to win legal and policy change, we must win in the court of public opinion. We aim to be independent, nonpartisan, and rigorous; and above all, we draw on the strength of our skilled, highly diverse, and dedicated staff - which include attorneys, researchers, social scientists, journalists, and communications and other experts. Our work is national in scope and benefits from close collaboration with local, state, and national allies. We have no grassroots army or community network. All we do is in conjunction with coalitions of state and national advocates, especially those engaged in the fight for racial and economic justice. Currently, we are in an extraordinary position: solutions we crafted and advanced for many years have moved closer to the center of public attention. Today, politics is polarized and often paralyzed. We see harsh assaults on communities of color and immigrants. The vital safeguards and checks and balances that underpin democracy are under attack. We know this: The best response to an attack on democracy is to strengthen democracy. Through our expertise, we have crafted pioneering policies such as automatic voter registration, now enacted in 16 states; and championed small donor public financing that would give ordinary Americans a much louder voice in political campaigns. We’ve crafted ballot initiatives that ended partisan gerrymandering across the country. And we’ve helped transform the debate over mass incarceration through groundbreaking research that revealed that nearly 40 percent of the U.S. prison population is locked up unnecessarily. Our core issues are - Ensuring that every American can vote - Defending our elections - Advancing Constitutional change and the rule of law - Ending mass incarceration - Ensuring fair representation and fighting gerrymandering - Strengthening our courts - Protecting our liberty and security The Brennan Center marshals our research, communications, and legal expertise to counter threats to democratic participation, advance affirmative solutions that will protect the integrity of our elections, and ensure fair representation for all. At a time when structural inequities have been laid bare, the need for democracy and justice reform has never felt more urgent.
