About This Cause
Van Cortlandt Park Alliance (VCPA) was formed in 2019 by merging two preexisting nonprofits whose 35 years of combined history lay the foundation for excellence in educational programming, cultural events, and restoration projects. Van Cortlandt Park Alliance is the sole nonprofit partner working with NYC Parks to manage the park. In April 2020, VCPA hired its first Executive Director, who also serves as the Van Cortlandt Park Administrator. This dual role has fostered the public-private partnership between NYC Parks and VCPA, allowing for more streamlined communication and collaboration. VCPA’s mission is to preserve, support, and promote the recreational, ecological, and historical value of Van Cortlandt Park. VCPA delivers educational, stewardship, cultural, and volunteer programs for participants of all ages, education levels, ethnicities, and backgrounds. Van Cortlandt Park, serving over 3 million people annually, is the third largest park in New York City, a living classroom for the next generation of environmental stewards, and a magnet for recreation and relaxation in the Bronx. As NYC Parks’ official nonprofit partner supporting this enormous, well-loved park in the Bronx, it is incumbent upon VCPA to meet the unique needs of its community with programming that is equitable and accessible. VCPA’s internship programs, which began in 2012, have provided opportunities to hundreds of underrepresented urban youth to work outdoors in a 1,146-acre living classroom.
