Mission Statement

The Center for Jewish History illuminates the history and culture of the Jewish people by fostering public access to and engagement with the world’s largest archive of the modern Jewish experience outside Israel. The collections of our five partners comprise over five miles of archival documents in dozens of languages and alphabet systems, over 500,000 volumes of books, and thousands of artworks, objects, textiles, and recordings, all spanning 5,000 years. The Center seeks to democratize access to collections and activate the stories they hold. We accomplish this through the expert work of our archivists and librarians, fellowships that supporting collections-based scholarship, academic and K-12 programs that offer educational opportunities inspired by collections, public programs that generate meaningful dialogue, and exhibitions that connect increasingly wider audiences.

About This Cause

The Center is a multifaceted institution that exists to preserve and share history and culture with local and global audiences. Its mission is three-fold: to protect and preserve the collections it houses; to democratize access to information and foster research; and to educate diverse constituencies through public programs and exhibitions. The Center was incorporated in 1995 and opened to the public in 2000 as the umbrella organization of five partner organizations: American Jewish Historical Society (AJHS), American Sephardi Federation (ASF), Leo Baeck Institute (LBI), Yeshiva University Museum (YU Museum), and YIVO Institute for Jewish Research (YIVO). As home to the collections of these five partner organizations, the Center is responsible for the preservation and protection of archives that contain the physical embodiments of over 1,000 years of history. The Center aims to open a public window into these collections, creating opportunities for audiences to engage with the Jewish past both on-site and online. Through ongoing initiatives to process, catalogue and digitize these artifacts, the Center has preserved significant aspects of history and heritage for generations to come.
