Mission Statement
Aisling Irish Community Center is the heart of the Irish immigrant and Irish American community in Yonkers and Woodlawn, NY. The center welcomes all and is home to a wide variety of cultural, recreational and social events. It also provides education, employment, accommodation, and legal/immigration referrals.
About This Cause
Since its founding in 1996, The Aisling Irish Community and Cultural Center has quietly won acclaim as a true gem amongst community resource centers, for the sheer volume of good it delivers to some of society's most vulnerable groups. Operating from a modest McLean Avenue storefront on the border of Yonkers and Woodlawn, the organization has, in its 21 years of existence, made an extraordinary impact on those targeted by its outreach, namely the New-Immigrant Irish transitioning into U.S. life, as well as the elderly Irish in our community, the Irish-American population in general, and needy individuals and groups in the center's immediate neighborhood and on NYC's hard streets. In 2017, it exemplifies an organization punching well above its weight, having evolved into a fully-fledged social services body through staunch dedication and hard work by a minimal staff in tight quarters. Over 800 people per week, in fact, benefit from the center’s programs, classes and services. Internal records track aid to an average 230 people on an individual basis weekly, where the issues most commonly addressed are accommodation, employment, drug and alcohol abuse, education and health. Beyond that, the classes and group programs on offer benefit over 580 people per week, on average. This workload reflects the best efforts of just four full-time staff members, one a fully-licensed Clinical Social Worker, dedicated to helping vulnerable people realize their full potential by optimizing their quality of life, career prospects and mental and physical well-being.
