Mission Statement

The mission of W!se is to improve economic mobility through programs that develop financial literacy and readiness for college and careers. Our initiatives are built on 5 pillars – relevancy, real-world experiences, partnerships, volunteerism, and evaluation.

About This Cause

W!se’s innovative and exciting programs instill students with the essential skills and experiences they need to participate fully in our increasingly complex global economy. W!se has the expertise and experience to succeed; a long-standing reputation for quality programs, materials and professional services, and strong relationships with schools, teachers, and the private sector. Central to our success is meaningful evaluation of our programs and their results. FINANCIAL EDUCATION AND FINANCIAL LITERACY Since 2002, W!se has recognized the need for high school financial education through our award winning Financial Literacy Certification program. Participating schools teach a course/unit on personal finance with instructional resources provided by W!se and then administer the W!se Financial Literacy Certification Test. Students who pass become Certified Financially Literate™. Offered in 49 states; 20% of schools are in NYC; 70% of NYC students are low- to moderate- income (LMI). 81% of students nationally passed the Test in 2019. To support instruction, we provide professional development, a curriculum, online lesson plans and other support for teaching as well as an online practice questions and an optional Pretest. The “100 Best W!se High Schools Teaching Personal Finance” recognizes schools of excellence in W!se’s national network. For more information, contact Elizabeth Odom: Eodom@wise-ny.org MONEYW!SE FOR SURVIVORS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Few people associate the need for financial literacy with domestic violence. However, financial abuse is experienced in 99% of domestic violence relationships. Financial education is, therefore, critical for victims of domestic violence to develop the knowledge to manage their money independently and the confidence to leave their abusive partner. In 2009, W!se created MoneyW!SE to provide this much-needed financial education. MoneyW!SE is a personal finance course offered for survivors of domestic violence that guides them onto a pathway of financial independence. At the end of the course, participants take W!se’s Financial Literacy Certification Test; those who pass become Certified Financially Literate – a credential that can help them in their search for work. PREPARATION FOR COLLEGE AND THE GLOBAL MARKETPLACE Created in 1998, The W!se Institute helps students in Title 1 NYC public high schools prepare for college/workplace through seminars conducted by volunteer professionals, as well as workshops and job shadows. Students are introduced to career pathways and gain the knowledge/skills to become competitive candidates for college/employment. Through its newest initiative, Engineered Green Economics (EGE), students learn about climate change, resource efficiency, clean energy, green careers and new technologies to prepare for a future environmental, social & economic challenges. Participating schools qualify for internships and annual scholarships. 70% of students are LMI. In 2018-19, the post-secondary enrollment rate 18 months after graduation was 85%, compared to the NYC 67% average. [Registration is year-round. 8-week sessions start quarterly.] For more information contact Sheila Beatty at sbeatty@wise-ny.org or (212) 421-2700. SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP Developed in 1994, QLI is a social entrepreneurship program and scholarship competition that helps economically disadvantaged students develop skills critical to college and workplace success. The students identify a real-world community issue they care about; work with field experts to conduct primary/secondary research; and use the research results to develop and implement creative, feasible and entrepreneurial solutions. Students with top-rated proposals earn college scholarships. This program appeals to students who are interested in voicing their concerns related to social justice, equity and access. 64% of students are low- to moderate-income (LMI); 93% attend a 4-year college. [QLI is October through April] For more information, contact Josiah Williams: jwilliams@wise-ny.org
