Mission Statement

Girls Inc. of New York City delivers life-changing programs that inspire girls to be strong, smart and bold.

About This Cause

MISSION Girls Inc. of New York City (GINYC) inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold, delivering life-transforming programs to girls, young women, and gender-expansive youth throughout New York City. Through education and advocacy, we prepare students to navigate gender, economic, and social barriers to advance to a more equitable world. Each year, GINYC serves up to 10,000 young people at 160+ school and community-based partner sites, with a focus on engaging girls from communities of color and underserved neighborhoods. Our research-based curricula support the development of the “whole girl,” with life-transforming programs spanning the topics of mental and physical health, STEM, college readiness and retention, leadership, financial literacy, and more. HISTORY GINYC is an independent affiliate of Girls Inc. that was created specifically to listen and respond to the voices of New York City’s girls. In 1993, GINYC began as an in-school and afterschool program at the Central Park East Secondary School in East Harlem, and then in 1995 began training other NYC community-based organizations to deliver Girls Inc. programs. Since achieving 501(c)(3) status in 1998, GINYC has been committed to providing all New York City girls with opportunities to grow and learn, and to partnering with local, community-based organizations to accomplish these goals. PROGRAMS Our innovative, evidence-based curricula nurture learning, create supportive spaces, build young people’s skills to achieve success, and provide non-traditional spaces for students to grow as individuals. Our programming includes: + Project Accelerate: College and career success program that includes College Shower, a college readiness program for high school juniors and seniors, and Project REACH, a college retention and career readiness program. + Mind Body Matters: Mental, physical, and social-emotional development—continually one of GINYC’s most in-demand programs. + Financial Literacy and Her Future: First-of-its-kind digitized financial literacy curriculum and mobile app designed for teen girls, particularly teen girls of color. + Generation Giga Girls (G3): Data analytics and STEM education using an award-winning digital platform with multicultural avatars and socially relevant vignettes. + Teen Leadership Circles: Student-led education, community action, and leadership development. + Healthy Sexuality: Comprehensive, evidence-based program that equips young people to take charge of their sexual and reproductive health. + Media Literacy: Critical analysis of the power and effects of media, as well as tools for discernment of truth from fiction and misinformation. + Project Bold: Self-defense strategies and gender-based violence prevention. POPULATION SERVED Approximately 40% of our participants are Black, 35% are Latina/x, 15% are bi/multiracial, 7% are Asian, and 3% are White/Caucasian. More than half of the students come from low-income households.
