Mission Statement
Part palace, part industrial shed, Park Avenue Armory fills a critical void in the cultural ecology of New York by enabling artists to create—and audiences to experience—unconventional work that cannot be mounted in traditional performance halls and museums.
About This Cause
The mission of Park Avenue Armory is to develop and produce unconventional works in the performing and visual arts that need non-traditional spaces for their full realization. With its palatial period rooms by leading Gilded Age designers and its soaring 55,000-square-foot Drill Hall, the Armory offers opportunities for artists to break the mold of traditional presentation, enabling them to create, and audiences to experience, epic, and adventurous work that cannot be done elsewhere in New York. The Armory has also developed a unique creativity-based arts education program that uses its unique assets – a magical ruined palace setting and out-of-the-box arts program – to give under-served New York City public school students the tools to think creatively and to learn how to trust their own judgments.
