Mission Statement

The mission of the Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation is to use Desmond Tutu’s life and teachings to inspire young people to build a world of peace within themselves, peace between people, and peace among nations. The Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation envisions a world in which everyone values human dignity and our interconnectedness. Real peace will prevail when there is a culture of peace in the USA and around the world. That culture originates in the hearts and minds of our youth, the future leaders and peace-makers of the world. Our programs are based on the teachings of Desmond Tutu who has dedicated his life to reshaping conversations about peace, equality, and forgiveness. The philosophy of Ubuntu guides us with its meaning of We are all connected. What affects one of us affects us all.

About This Cause

How do we help transform our society here in the United States, and ultimately in the world, from being a culture of violence and selfishness to a culture of collaboration, justice, mutual respect and compassion? We begin by teaching young adults, the future leaders of our country, how to be at peace within themselves and how to use that way of being as an instrument for understanding and addressing important social problems; hence, fostering peace between people in their communities and ultimately, peace among nations. The Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation (DTPF) envisions a world in which everyone values human dignity. Real peace will prevail when there is a culture of peace throughout the world. That culture originates in the hearts and minds of our youth, the future leaders and peacemakers of our world. Our programming uses the life and teachings of Nobel Peace laureate Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, who as you know, has dedicated his life to reshaping conversations about peace, equality and forgiveness. We are guided by his philosophy of Ubuntu because, like him, we also believe that We are all connected. What affects one of us affects us all. Current programs include: 1) UNITY: THE DESMOND TUTU LEGACY PROJECT DTPF has partnered with the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation and the Tutu family to launch UNITY, series of live and multi-media events to celebrate the life and legacy of the Archbishop. This includes the production of a documentary film, a soundtrack, and a series of live and digital events intended to raise awareness of the Archbishop’s global message. The project launches on the Archbishop’s 85th birthday and will continue at least throughout the year, culminating with a stadium event on the Archbishop’s 86th birthday. 2) THE DESMOND TUTU LEGACY AWARDS This will be an annual event coinciding with the Legacy Project concert. The awards celebrate individuals or groups whose work and commitment to social justice is aligned with the legacy created by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Honorees come from the worlds of politics, entertainment, business, and philanthropy. 3) THE DESMODN TUTU CENTRE FOR PEACE Construction has begun to restore the historic Grainary Building in Cape Town, which will house a museum and cultural center as well as be a place of communion for thought leaders to come and work to make this world a better place. This is a program co-sponsored between Desmond Tutu Peace Foundation and the Archbishop's South African foundation, the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation. 4) PEACE3 PROGRAMMING A college and university program across North America meant to initiate dialogue on the issues of importance to young people. Topics focus on race and privilege, interfaith dialogue, environmental issues, LGBTI issues and much more. These events include local community activists, workshops and keynote speakers by luminaries and experts related to topic being discussed. 5) INTERNATIONAL PEACE CONFERENCES In 2015, DTPF launched its first Peace Conference in Jacmel, Haiti, bringing together peace leaders from organizations all over Haiti to discuss real world solutions for making their communities safer and more peaceful. The concept has expanded and will take place for a second year in Haiti in August 2016, and is scheduled for Finland and Nigeria in the fourth quarter of 2016. These efforts and more are all being undertaken to ensure that the Archbishop’s work for peace, justice and equality continue for generations to come.
