Mission Statement

Ghetto Film School (GFS) is an award-winning non-profit founded in 2000 to educate, develop and celebrate the next generation of great storytellers. With locations in New York City, Los Angeles and London, GFS equips students for top universities and careers in the creative industries through two tracks: an introductory education program for high school students and early-career support for alumni and young professionals. GFS annually serves over 8,000 individuals, 14-34 years of age.

About This Cause

GFS began with the Fellows Program, an immersive cinematic storytelling and production training program for diverse young filmmakers ages 14 -18 in NYC and LA County. Students create short films, commercials and other creative content while receiving over 1,000 hours of instruction and hands-on training from leading filmmakers and industry professionals. In 2009, GFS led a partnership with the NYC Department of Education to open The Cinema School (TCS), a South Bronx select admissions public school. The nation’s first film high school, TCS serves 350 students. The Fellows Program is a 15-month co-curricular honors course at TCS. 85% of students are from the Bronx, Harlem and Washington Heights. In 2014, with partners 21st Century Fox and local non-profit Heart of Los Angeles, GFS LA opened with a 30-month Fellows Program serving 75 students from over 45 neighborhoods and municipalities across LA County. GFS London launched in 2020 after carrying out a 2017 Pilot Programme in London better informed the decision to establish a new international location. The London programme is an 18-month Fellowship accepting Fellows aged 16-18. GFS’ programs give individuals the skills to become better storytellers, a deep experience and appreciation of the film, media and creative sectors, and personal relationships with the sectors’ experts. The organization boasts leadership from filmmakers like Lee Daniels, Melina Matsoukas and David O. Russell, and media professionals like James Murdoch. GFS is committed to the long-term academic and professional success of Fellows. A recent study of the LA Fellows Program showed students: - Graduate high school at a rate of 98% - Attend college at a rate of 92% - Matriculate at prominent colleges and universities (e.g. Columbia University, NYU Tisch School of the Arts, SUNY Purchase Film Conservatory, Vassar College) - Work at top film and media companies (e.g. 21st Century Fox, Magnolia Pictures, Vice Media). By leveraging immense resources and an industry network, GFS builds a foundation for young people’s achievement and professional success. The organization forms a strong, diverse creative community, enabling young creative people to explore and better navigate future opportunities across a broader range of industries.
