About This Cause

This company specializes in offering grass root creators opportunities to be welcomed into the professional ranks. In so doing they have a history of programs empowering and enabling artists to find their greatest and richest authentic selves and to offer that to an audience. The Drilling Company was started in 1999. In the years since the quantity and quality of artists associated with company has been vast and permeated throughout our industry of communications and storytelling from a Pulitzer prize nominee a playwright to a ground breakings actresses to authors to commercial faces you come to recognize to the quality actors who inhabit the silver screen and your evening regular shows on Netflix, Drilling Company artists have permeated quietly thoroughout our industry. It's founder had a vision to create theatre experiences that were similar to his experiences of jazz music. To do so he invited a ten playwrights to create short plays around a common theme: CARS. He reflected a wide range of emotional beginnings and endings in America were anchored in an automobile and thought it a ripe destination for the imagination of playwrights. Those projects continued for fifteen years and all but one were realized at The 78th Street Theatre Lab which became the The Drilling Company Theatre for New Plays where many of the full length works of developed playwrights were later developed. In 2013 The Drilling Company was fortunate to launch and Off-Broadway run of C.Denby Swanson’s “The Norwegians” which ran for 168 performances , garnering rave reviews, a NY Times critics pick and publication by Dramatists play Service. The play continues to be produced today around the world. So, what about Shakespeare in the Parking Lot? Shakespeare in the Parking Lot was begun on the Lower e East Side in 1995 in a prking lot at Ludlow and Broome. By 2001 The Drilling Company was co-producer and in 2006 became the sole producer of the program which they have continued since for almost twenty years. In Shakespeare in the PArking Lot the Drilling Company found a match for one of its early missions: to create content that drew audineces together across racial boundaries , across socio-economic boundaries and across the boundaries of age and other social divisions. In Shakespeare's work they also found a home for the rich talents of many of the actors associated with the company. By 2014, just eight years after the company had assumed the riens of SitPL the company endured a two- fold blow. Their theatre space at 78th Street was closing due to real estate concerns beyond their power to alter and simultaneously the parking lot was scheduled for development after 45 years of stasis on the Lower East Side. Just at this moment, Bryant Park, not knowing any of the above, reached out to The Drilling Company and asked them to bring their Shakespeare to Bryant Park. Shortly thereafter, the company found a new parking lot on the lower east side behind the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural center and in short time they began developing new plays again at the Access Theatre downtown. Today the company continues developing new works with an eye towards bringing them to a greater audience and continues their FREE Shakespeare in the Parking Lot tradition on the Lower East Side of Manhattan.
