Mission Statement
The Legal Aid Society exists for one simple yet powerful reason: to ensure that no New Yorker is denied their right to equal justice because of poverty. For over 140 years, we have protected, defended, and advocated for those that have struggled in silence for far too long – working on the frontlines and behind-the-scenes to offer our clients the exceptional legal services they deserve. Through our Civil, Criminal Defense, and Juvenile Rights Practices, we offer an unmatched depth and breadth of legal expertise to vulnerable New Yorkers, no matter what legal challenges they may face. Every day, in every borough, The Legal Aid Society tenaciously defends the rights of our clients, passionately advocates on their behalf, and tirelessly pushes for essential reforms in the justice system to improve lives and strengthen communities.
About This Cause
Every year, The Legal Aid Society handles over 300,000 legal matters, benefitting thousands of New Yorkers. As the largest social justice law firm in the nation, our 2,000 staff members work tirelessly across all of our units to ensure our clients receive the highest quality representation. Each of our three Practices sets the gold standard for legal representation: • Our Civil Practices operates 22 specialized units and programs that effectively serve over 118,000 New Yorkers each year, no matter what challenge they are facing. Our work ensures that our clients can earn a living wage, have a place to sleep, and can care for themselves and their families. • Our Criminal Defense Practice is the premier public defender program in the country, handling almost 230,000 criminal matters each year. Our victories in and out of the courtroom protect the constitutional rights of our clients and challenge unjust policies. • Our Juvenile Rights Practice represents over 90% of the children who appear each year in New York City’s Family Court. Our work with these most vulnerable New Yorkers keeps them safe and makes our city’s families and communities stronger. Through the determined work of staff across all of our Practices, The Legal Aid Society serves the vital function of ensuring that all those in need of legal representation have it at every level of our justice system. We make our city a better place for all New Yorkers – offering a beacon of hope to those who have been denied their most basic rights. In these challenging times, our fight for our clients is more important than ever before. As longstanding, systemic injustices fester, our clients are facing grave legal challenges at every turn. For every dollar donated to our Civil Practice generates $18 in benefits that for directly to our clients. Last year alone, our Homeless Prevention Program saved taxpayers more than $130 million in averted shelter costs. By creating alternatives to unnecessary detentions, our Criminal Defense Practice saves thousands of taxpayer dollars each year. The Legal Aid Society is an essential piece of this city’s justice system.
