HAVENS RELIEF FUND SOCIETY

NEW YORK, New York, 10115-0023 United States

Mission Statement

Havens' mission is to support the self determination of at-risk New York City individuals and families by engaging a network of volunteer community leaders and professionals to make modest one-time grants designed to address a personal financial crisis, improve quality of life, or increase opportunities.

About This Cause

The Havens Relief Fund Society is a private operating foundation under the 501(c)3 tax code. Our founder Charles G. Havens believed that the vicissitudes of life could temporarily derail almost anyone of limited financial means, and that a modest grant at the right moment could return them to the path of self-reliance. He founded the Havens Relief Fund Society in 1871, and when he died 17 years later, he left the bulk of his estate to the Society. Since then, the Havens Relief Fund has remained true to his vision: to help struggling New York City residents and their families overcome imminent financial crises that might otherwise have devastating impacts on their lives by providing modest, one-time grants through a network of volunteer professionals and community leaders. Over the past 151 years, the Havens Relief Fund has disbursed more than $40 million in grants -- providing aid in times of dire crisis to 175,000 individuals and families living in New York City. In 2022, over 2,000 Havens grants impacted the lives over 5,000 individuals and families. On average Havens grants are $731. These modest grants help to keep families intact in their homes and avoid homelessness; ensure children have clothes for school and food on the table while their parents look for work; replace belongings lost in a fire, and assist domestic violence survivors in finding a safe place to live. Today all grants are made through a network of appointed volunteers called Almoners who are empowered on behalf of the Society to act promptly when faced with a New Yorker in crisis. Havens currently has 150 Almoners representing a wide range of New Yorkers. Many work in New York City's health and social services agencies or serve as religious and community leaders. Almoners are recommended by the Executive Director to the Board Committee on Almoners for approval. Havens has two grant-making programs: the Almoner Appropriations Fund and the Revolving Fund. In January every year, each Havens Almoner receives an annual Appropriation set by the Board based on their grantmaking the previous year. Following Havens' grant conditions and requirements, Almoners are then empowered to make individual grants up to $1,000 each throughout the year. Almoners must report on grants as they are made and must also submit a complete report on all grant funds by October 15th each year. The Revolving Fund is available to all Almoners to request grants larger than $1,000, which are reviewed and approved by staff and two Board members. On average Havens makes these grants within hours of the Almoner’s submission, making Havens truly an emergency financial assistance fund for New Yorkers in crisis.
