Mission Statement
Third Street Music School Settlement provides high-quality music and dance education through on-site, public-school and community programs, as well as an arts-infused preschool, to New Yorkers of all ages, regardless of background, artistic ability or economic circumstance. Our programs are taught by exceptional faculty in an environment that nurtures individual achievement and creativity, affording students the opportunity to reach their full musical potential while developing a life-long love of the arts.
About This Cause
As the nation’s longest running community music school, Third Street has been transforming the lives of young people, their families, and their neighborhoods through affordable access to high-quality arts instruction for over 125 years. In the late 19th century, Third Street was founded by Emilie Wagner, a social worker and teacher who had the unique inspiration to make music education the cornerstone of a settlement house that also provided critical social services to immigrant families in the Lower East Side. Today, Third Street continues Ms. Wagner’s work through its mission to ensure equitable access to music and dance education for New Yorkers of all ages, ethnicities, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Third Street’s programs reach 5,000+ students from across New York City annually, enriching their lives and communities. Third Street trains students in two-dozen instruments and ensembles ranging from chamber to orchestra to jazz band. Third Street’s programs include: 1) music and dance instruction for people of all ages, offered seven days a week; 2) public school, public housing and community partnerships (Third Street Partners) providing instruction in 20+ under-resourced communities across the five boroughs; 3) a licensed, music-infused preschool; and 4) a performance program with 250 concerts for 10,000+ audience members annually.
