Mission Statement
The Ukrainian Academy of Arts & Sciences in the U.S.A. is an association of scholars dedicated to the promotion and advancement of Ukrainian studies and culture in the United States. Established in 1950 in New York City as heir to the the All-Ukrainian Academy of Sciences of the 1920s in Kyiv, it is now housed in its own landmark-designated Renaissance-style building, the former Bloomingdale Branch of the New York Public Library, which contains it's own library of circa 55,000 volumes and museum-archival holdings of "Ucrainica" (350 archives encompassing over 500,000 items), making it the most extensive archive outside Ukraine. Besides holding lectures, seminars, commemorative events, concerts and art exhibitions, both independently and in cooperation with other scholarly institutions, the Academy has published over 200 books and journal issues, including its own periodical "Annals of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts & Sciences in the United States", of which all volumes are on-line at www.uvan.org.
About This Cause
Research and education are the primary activities of the Academy. Opportunities for research are provided for scholars and qualified students, who have come from as close as New York City universities (Columbia, NYU, CUNY) and as far as the Czech Republic, England (Oxford), France (Sorbonne), Germany, Israel and Ukraine. Public interest is further served by providing information and counseling to scholars and students regarding higher education in the United States and abroad. The Academy also sponsors educational and cultural events open to the public. It presents lectures, conferences, seminars, commemorative events, concerts and art exhibitions. These are mostly independently given and sometimes in cooperation with other scholarly institutions such as The Harriman Institute of Columbia University, the Ukrainian Research Institute of Harvard University, the Shevchenko Scientific Society, the Ukrainian Museum in New York.
