Mission Statement
As the nonprofit 501(c)(3) affiliate of the New York City Bar Association, the City Bar Fund leverages the strengths of the City Bar Association through four programs: the 1) City Bar Justice Center, 2) Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice, 3) Office for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging, and 4) Lawyer Assistance Program. These four programs mobilize lawyers to do good work for people and organizations in need.
About This Cause
The four programs of the City Bar Fund maximize the City Bar Association’s relationships with law firms, corporations, academic institutions, legal services organizations, and nonprofits, to advance work in the following areas. • City Bar Justice Center - Expands access to justice for low-income and disadvantaged New Yorkers by leveraging the volunteered time and expertise of the New York City legal community through an effective pro bono model. It works in the fields of veterans assistance, immigration, homelessness, cancer and elder law, foreclosure, bankruptcy, planning and estates law, and micro-entrepreneurship. It also operates a civil legal hotline, which offers legal information, advice, and referrals to low-income New Yorkers who cannot afford a private attorney or do not have access to legal representation. • Cyrus R. Vance Center for International Justice – Brings together leading law firms to pioneer international justice initiatives and provide pro bono legal representation to civil society organizations working globally on human rights, the environment, institutional integrity, and public interest reporting. It also implements innovative programs designed to strengthen pro bono practice, provide systemic support for public interest law, and reduce barriers to a more diverse legal field. • Office for Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Belonging – Advances a more equitable and inclusive legal profession by cultivating community, fostering leadership, and expanding access to the profession. ODEIB leads initiatives that prepare high school, college, and law students for legal careers, while also supporting attorneys through leadership development, affinity networks, and professional opportunities. Through advocacy, education, and community-building, ODEIB helps ensure that the legal profession better reflects the society it serves. • Lawyer Assistance Program – Provides free, confidential services, available to attorneys, judges, law students, and their family members in New York City who are struggling with alcohol or drug abuse, depression, anxiety, stress, as well as other addictions and mental health issues. It offers consultation, evaluation/assessment, counseling, referral, intervention, peer support, attorney monitoring, outreach, and education. *Please designate which program of the City Bar Fund your contribution is intended for.
