Mission Statement

Chess-in-the-Schools is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to improving academic performance and building self-esteem among low-income public school children.

About This Cause

We have four programs aimed at improving academic performance and access to quality chess programs: The School Program is comprised of classroom instruction and after-school clubs. Both offer fun and enriching learning opportunities for young chess players of all levels of experience and skill. This school year we will teach chess to 13,000 elementary and middle school students. Scholastic Tournaments offer students an opportunity to showcase their skills in a friendly, competitive environment. This school year we will organize 25 tournaments in New York City, with attendance at each ranging from 400-750. College Bound offers college readiness programming and advanced chess instruction for high school students who participated in The School Program. This year 100 students are participating. Additionally, CIS offers college success program helping its alums to graduate college and start professional careers. The Project Chess Teacher Training Institute workshops and materials designed to help classroom teachers initiate chess programs in their schools. This program was implemented in response the lengthy waiting list that developed for The School Program. To-date, more than 2,500 teachers have participated.
