NEW YORK STUDIO SCHOOL

NEW YORK, New York, 10011-9002 United States

Mission Statement

Founded in 1964 by noted American artist and educator Mercedes Matter, New York Studio School prepares talented graduate-level fine arts students for the life of a working artist. NYSS offers a full-time MFA and Certificate Programs, part-time classes, intensive Marathons, and a rich slate of public programs, including gallery exhibitions and its twice-weekly lecture series. Each year the School serves an audience of over 20,000 through its education programs and public programming.

About This Cause

Founded by artists for artists, NYSS offers a Master of Fine Arts Program; a Certificate Program; evening and weekend classes; and its signature Marathons, immersive two-week programs in drawing, painting, and sculpture. NYSS’ academic programs require intensive work in the studio and close contact with outstanding artist-faculty, visiting critics, and guest lecturers; they offer exhibition opportunities and the chance to be in community with extraordinary artists across generations. Students leave with a thorough understanding of artmaking, a dedicated practice, discipline, and preparation for life as a working artist. NYSS’s core curriculum is designed to encourage innovation and to provide all participants with freedom to cultivate their personal artistic expression, while situating themselves in a lineage of human mark-making spanning millennia. NYSS does not seek to teach a specific style, but instead encourages each artist to pursue their own, unique voice. NYSS’s public programming – the Evening Lecture Series and the Main Gallery exhibitions – are considered a crucial element of the School’s pedagogy.
