Mission Statement

Our mission is to work alongside community leaders, organizations, and networks to shape positive change. We envision a world where inclusive communities ensure basic needs such as food security are met, environmentally sustainable practices take root, and, where citizens hold government to account, protect and promote human rights, and foster constructive public dialogue.

About This Cause

As people around the world flee war, suffer from hunger, and find themselves struggling to survive, let alone thrive, in fragile and unpredictable environments, Counterpart International is on the ground to offer hope and assist in creating citizen-led, transformational change. We believe local communities create the most effective social, political, and economic solutions to challenges when its citizens, organizations, and networks create and implement solutions together. We accelerate the process of change by strengthening the capacities of leaders, organizations, and networks to identify challenges and implement their own solutions more effectively and inclusively. This has proven time and time again better and more relevant development outcomes to communities. Counterpart’s Impact Together with our local partners, we are improving health and nutrition, expanding access to education, strengthening climate resiliency, enhancing people’s livelihoods, and ensuring communities are governed more inclusively. • Food Security: We help communities identify and address the full spectrum of issues affecting food security and community health to end hunger and promote well-being for all. We support locally led efforts to reduce food insecurity and malnutrition by increasing availability and access to food, improving food use, and to build a resilient, adaptive, and inclusive, enabling environment that promotes household well-being and food security. Since 2015, Counterpart has supported an average of 137,000 students on a yearly basis with nutritious meals, collaborated with 1,370 number of schools in total, and increased student retention. • Women’s Empowerment: No country can fully realize its potential if women and girls are left behind. Gender equality and women’s empowerment are human rights that lie at the heart of development. Counterpart integrates gender equality in all program activities and ensures gender equality in our hiring practices and in the selection of partners and grantees. Our emerging leaders programs are designed to improve women’s opportunities to take on new roles in their own communities and countries. Through the emerging leaders program, we have reached 1,000 women in 77 countries, matching them with mentors from developing countries and providing an online platform for this network to continue learning and growing as a community. • Governance and Civil Society: Our efforts in more than 20 countries around the world help equip people to take up their rightful role in civic life. We help communities constructively engage with government and build the capacity of civil society leaders, organizations and networks who educate citizens on how to exercise their rights. We also assist governments in implementing transparent and accountable policies and in building more effective citizen-government partnerships. This approach has improved access to health, education, water and sanitation services, increased revenue for local governments to deliver inclusive services, improved transparency and accountability of national and subnational level governments, and resulted in concrete changes to laws and policies in politically complex countries. Counterpart is helping people build better lives and more durable and hopeful futures.
