Mission Statement
Literacy Connections is dedicated to developing and offering programs and services to support a literate society. We recruit and train volunteers to provide no-cost student-centered tutoring primarily for adults, and we offer programs and services for children and families that promote independence and enrichment through literacy. Literacy Connections envisions a society in which all people can read, write and reach their potential.
About This Cause
About Literacy Connections Founded in 1975, Literacy Connections is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering adults with the lowest literacy levels and immigrants lacking English language skills in Dutchess, Columbia, Greene, and Orange Counties. Recognizing that literacy affects families, we also provide reading enrichment to children through programs like Book Buddies, where volunteers foster a love for reading in schools. Our mission is to help adults read, write, and function independently. We train volunteers to offer personalized, student-centered tutoring in one-on-one or small-group settings, focusing on learners' unique goals. Teaching adults requires sensitivity, respect, and relevance to their daily challenges. Core Programs • Basic Readers: Tutoring English-speaking adults reading below a 6th-grade level to enhance their literacy and life skills. • English Language Learners (ELL): Supporting non-English speakers in conversational and reading skills through drop-in centers, small groups, and one-on-one tutoring. • Book Buddies: Pairing volunteers with children in schools for weekly reading sessions to improve literacy and foster positive experiences with books. • Classroom Book Buddies: Engaging volunteers to read aloud with groups of Pre-K and K children. • Math Buddies: Helping elementary students improve math fluency and understanding in small groups or one-on-one settings (available in select schools). Volunteer Opportunities Literacy Connections actively recruits and trains volunteers to support our programs. Volunteers attend an orientation and, for tutors, a 12-hour online workshop. Program coordinators provide ongoing support, resources, and materials. Why It Matters Low literacy affects 1 in 5 adults in the U.S., limiting independence and opportunities. It impacts health, employment, and families. By addressing literacy, we transform lives, families, and communities.
