About This Cause

Project Safe addresses the needs of persons between the ages of 12 and 35, who are or have been sexually exploited, at risk of sexual exploitation, or homeless. Project Safe grew out of a strong inner city concern in 1985 to do something about excessive levels of street prostitution. On a daily basis, residents, clergy and merchants saw significant numbers of teenagers walking the streets for prostitution. Project Safe developed a service method that would give each youth a way off the street. Services include counseling, outreach and crisis intervention. The program was designed for youth who wanted to exit prostitution, but were stuck in the cycle of sexual exploitation and drugs. Services had to be tailored to the dynamics of the youth’s life. The first 38 referrals to Project Safe all possessed similar dynamics. All were runaways and 37 of the 38 had a sexual contact with an adult in a familiar situation before the age of 13. Since the development of Project Safe, 6,800 youth have been served and the recidivism rate is less than 25% will return to the streets the first six months after Safe’s intervention. The success of Project Safe can be attributed to the community outreach done by Safe’s Street Outreach Workers. The Street Outreach Program is designed to reach the youth in need of services and direct them to the appropriate program. Annually the Street Outreach Team assists 250 youth and families in crisis. The Anti-Trafficking Program assists all ages over time to ensure success. Project Safe remains a unique program because it takes a holistic approach to treating the youth. The outreach also educates the community to help the community to understand the victimization of this population and how to break the cycle of exploitation. The key elements of the development of this project were to understand victimization of this population and work with the individual to break the cycle of exploitation. Project Safe’s sister component is The McIntosh House (formaly known as Safe House). The McIntosh House opened its doors in 1989 and is the only certified emergency youth shelter in Schenectady County that serves the runaway, the homeless and sexually exploited. Safe offers temporary shelter to males and females between the ages of 16 and 20. During their stay at Safe they work with the Clinical Staff to find more suitable long-term placements. The shelter is certified by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and is a thirty-day facility.
