Mission Statement
The mission of Jazz Choreography Enterprises, Inc., is to promote the creation of original jazz choreography in concert form. To this end, we give jazz choreographers at various stages of their development the opportunity to show their work. We are committed to presenting choreography in a variety of jazz styles, created and performed by people of various ages and levels of experience. In addition to presenting performances, we offer educational programs for dancers, choreographers, and the general public with the goal of developing artists and audiences for jazz dance.
About This Cause
Jazz Choreography Enterprises (JCE) presents jazz dance performances to New York audiences so they can learn about this great American art form. JCE’s mission is to promote the creation of original jazz choreography in concert form; its goal is to keep jazz dance thriving through high-quality, original jazz choreography in a variety of styles. In this way dance artists gain experience working in jazz styles, and audiences can experience this unique amalgam of African and European dance cultures that merged in America. In May 2007, Marian Hyun, JCE’s Co-Artistic Director, produced the first performance of the JCE Jazz Dance Project. The performance was sold out and enthusiastically received by the artists and audience. Realizing that audiences had fewer opportunities to see jazz dance than in years past, Marian Hyun, Co-Artistic Director Merete Muenter, President/Treasurer Greg Harris, and former board member Lynne Lombardi founded JCE in July 2007. JCE has produced all subsequent performances of the Jazz Project. JCE offers educational opportunities, including workshops in significant jazz techniques; workshops for students at Groove With Me, a nonprofit dance and youth development organization in East Harlem; and a minicourse in jazz dance for Quinnipiac University’s Honors Program students.
