About This Cause
Since being founded in 1902, the SPCA of Tompkins county has sought to end cruelty and provide safe shelter to the unwanted, abandoned, and homeless animals of our community. In 1999, the BOD resolved to transition over a 2 year period from a traditional shelter to a no-kill shelter, and in 2001 that dream was realized and the SPCA of TC became the nations first open admission no kill shelter. In 2004, thanks to the generosity of Dorothy and Roy Park, a brand new state of the art cageless adoption center was opened and became the first LEED certified animal shelter in the country. Often named as one of the safest places in the United States for homeless pets, to this day the SPCA continues our commitment to environmentally friendly and sustainable animal sheltering In 2014 to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the opening of the Pet Adoption Center the Swanson Solar Power array was installed to provide clean and renewable energy. The SPCA receives nearly 1500 calls of suspected abuse or neglect right here in Tompkins County every year, as well as providing animal control services to our local municipalities. We are the only low cost spay and neuter provider locally and each year perform nearly 2000 S/N surgeries for low income members of our community who without our help would struggle to afford this critical step in reducing the unwanted pet population. Every year the SPCA participates in countless humane education events with local girl scout troupes, area schools, and local libraries. Each summer Over 150 children aged 9-12 attend our wildly popular SPCA Summer camp. Students learn about humane and appropriate care of companion animals, wildlife and participate in a hoist of offsite field trips. Currently, the SPCA takes in close to 2000 animals each every year and who find happy new homes here in our community. These animals are often abandoned, abused or unwanted but the SCPA staff, along with over 250 annual volunteers, rehabilitate, train, and care for these animals keeping them safe, happy, and socialized until they find their new forever homes. None of this would be possible without YOU! THE SPCA is not a government or municipal shelter and relies solely on the generosity of our community to support the work that we do.
