About This Cause

Lollypop Farm, the Humane Society of Greater Rochester, is definitely not the average animal shelter. We are the third oldest SPCA in New York State and for more than a century, we have been a safe-haven for homeless and neglected pets. Looked up to by peers across the country, our program and leadership staff are sought out as guest speakers and called upon for advice in every aspect of shelter management. We have successfully combined the charm of a rural farm with a holistic approach to animal care that stretches the entire span of a pet’s life with its people and beyond. While the shelter itself has always housed and adopted companion animals, the actual farm serves as an educational sanctuary and animal rescue for farm animals that have been abandoned or abused – and every farm animal has a name! In 2020, we had 205 farmyard friends adopted to new homes. Children and animals are brought together in a safe, friendly, and fun environment. The “Kids out & About” annual survey of parents rated Lollypop Farm 5th in the top 20 places to take kids in the Rochester area. Together with our community, we better the lives of animals through justice, prevention, and life-saving care. Over 100 staff and more than 775 volunteers not only provide food, shelter, and adoptions for homeless animals but also a variety of services that help keep pets in homes with their loving families. Our programs include: Pet Adoptions, Foster Care & Shelter for Homeless Animals: • Last year alone, we assisted more than 10,000 pets in our community. • All adoptable pets are spay/neutered, vaccinated, and provided comprehensive care by our veterinary team, and have been evaluated by our behavior team. • In 2020 our Klingenstein Veterinary Clinic performed a total of 7,050 surgeries, of that number 6015 were spay/neuter surgeries. • When animals come into the shelter, our team of behavior specialists evaluate them to identify any behavior issues and if needed, will provide them with behavior modification programs to increase their chance at successful adoptions. • In 2020, we placed over 3,562 animals into new homes, and 1,171 cats, kittens, dogs, rodents, and rabbits were placed in our foster program. • The Seniors-for-Seniors Adoption Program is open to adopters who are 60 years of age or older. Lollypop Farm expert adoption counselors help them select a dog or cat who is at least six years old who fits into a senior person’s lifestyle and housing situation. The adoption fee is waived. Humane Law Enforcement: • The Humane Law Enforcement Department at Lollypop Farm plays a critical role in addressing cruelty to animals in our community. Our organization maintains an SPCA designation and is charged with investigating and enforcing the animal cruelty laws of New York State. • We receive upwards of 2,300 calls for service each year. Reports range from mild neglect to criminal acts of intentional cruelty. In 2020, these calls resulted in 192 animals being removed from unsafe conditions, 7 arrests, and the remainder of cases resulted in educational opportunities where the issues were resolved in the field. • Our humane law enforcement officers are certified state peace officers with the authority to make arrests—not “dogcatchers” or animal control officers. The department serves Monroe, Orleans, Genesee, and Livingston counties. Officers also assist authorities in other areas, such as Wayne County. Investigators respond to concerns about animal cruelty reported through our Animal Cruelty Hotline (585-223-6500), as well as cases referred by other law enforcement agencies. Humane Education: • Through the lens of compassion and respect for all living things, we educate youth and adults about pet ownership, pet needs, and safety. • Each year young people benefit from our Farm Camp, Field Trips, Animal-Related Reading Readiness Programs, and other educational programming. We educate children and adults using on-line platforms and in-person programming offered in schools and at Lollypop Farm. Outreach and Pet Retention Programs: • Lollypop Farm’s Pet Pantry provides pet food assistance to those in need through partnerships with local food banks or by request at our main shelter. • In 2020, we helped more than 1,909 pets through our Spay/Neuter Incentive Program (SNIP) which offers low-cost spaying and neutering. Additionally, we provided FREE spay/ neuter and vaccinations for over 1164 feral cats. • Through HOME (Help and Options for Medical Emergencies), we help pet caretakers experiencing economic hardship who are facing terrible choices when their beloved pet gets sick or injured. Depending on the situation, we provide medical advice, refer to a partner veterinarian for subsidized treatment, or provide the treatment by our own veterinary team. Our goal is to keep more pets at home with their loving families. The value of our mission is reflected in the generous community support we receive that enables us to move our mission forward. We take pride in fiscal responsibility and ensure each gift received has the largest impact possible. Lollypop Farm is proud to have received the coveted Four Star Award from Charity Navigator and achieved the Platinum level GuideStar Nonprofit charity status. We are also a BBB Accredited Charity.
