Mission Statement

Mom' House provides free NY State licensed childcare to low-income single parents who are enrolled in school.

About This Cause

Mom's House Inc. opened in 1988 with the mission of helping economically disadvantaged single parents attain financial self-sufficiency through the power of education. This is accomplished by providing free licensed childcare and other support services while parents attend school full-time. Without these services, many single parents would find it impossible to complete their education. In addition to receiving free childcare, parents are given food and clothing donations, encouragement, love and emotional support. Each parent enrolled must be a serious student, obtaining passing grades, and must do their part in keeping the Mom's House program functioning by donating three hours of services time at Mom's House per week and five hours of fundraising time per semester. To further guarantee success, parents must attend once-a-month workshops on a variety of topics including resume writing, nutrition, financial planning, legal advice, parenting skills, etc. Mom's House has grown tremendously in the years since opening our doors to eight children and six parents. Today, we operate out of a brand new centrally located facility with the capacity to serve up to 40 children and their parents. Over 275 single parents have graduated from their educational programs while at Mom's House and countless others have been helped along the way by our organization in the various stages of their academic journey. These achievers have gained financial independence and are working in professions such as nursing, education, health care, human services, computer science, etc. They are providing a brighter future for themselves and their children. According to the latest national figures from the U.S. Census Bureau, about 4 out of 10 live births are to single parents and the majority of those live at or below the poverty level. The types of jobs they have make it difficult to support a family. A full 62 percent are employed in retail or service industries, which usually pay poorly, offer few benefits, and have inflexible schedules. For those who question the value of higher education, young college graduates are outperforming their less educated peers by a significant amount in virtually every measure of economic well-being and career attainment - from personal earnings to job satisfaction to those employed full-time. In fact, those with a bachelor's degree earn 61 percent more than those whose highest level of education is high school. Furthermore, college graduates are far less likely to participate in government-funded social programs, and they contribute to the overall tax revenue which in turn relieves a percentage of the tax burden for all taxpayers. There is a significant need to not only provide a program that enables single parents to break the cycle of poverty but also one that offers quality childcare for the children in these families. Studies confirm that attending a daycare center with high standards has lasting returns will into adulthood. For several years now, the Mom's House program has contributed to the positive outcomes associated with not only higher education but with providing a quality childcare program as well. We are grateful for those individuals who support our organization and help us make a difference in lives of single parent families.
