Mission Statement
Foundation Mission: To provide financial support for Westlake Academy in its efforts to provide college-bound students with an internationally-minded education of the highest quality so they are well-balanced and respectful life-long learners. Each year, the Foundation raises nearly $1.5 million to support the hard-working students and dedicated teachers of Westlake Academy.
About This Cause
Westlake Academy opened its doors in September 2003 when Town of Westlake officials took advantage of Texas’ acceptance of charter schools and became the first municipality to receive a charter designation. Westlake Academy is one of the few schools in the United States that exclusively offers the world-renowned internationally recognized International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum to grades K-12. As an IB school, Westlake Academy students “learn how to learn” and to apply their knowledge in the real world. They ask challenging questions and think critically, looking for new connections versus accepting the status quo. They develop vital writing, research and problem-solving skills invaluable in higher education and future careers. Individuals and businesses contribute to the Westlake Academy Foundation as a way to positively impact our challenging K-12 IB education. By donating to one campaign or spreading contributions across several initiatives, donors support the shared vision of educating students to be curious, compassionate critical thinkers and life-long learners. A description of our fundraising initiatives follows. As a public charter school, Westlake Academy receives approximately 70% of the state funding, per student, of the average public school. The Blacksmith Annual Fund (BAF) provides important dollars to fill this financial gap for the ongoing operations of the school. Families are asked to consider a gift of $2,500/student - or their best gift - to support their children’s IB education. Civic-minded businesses contribute, often through matching employee gifts, to support a K-12 public school known for academic excellence. The Westlake Baja fundraiser began in 2009 as a golf tournament with the vision of raising dedicated faculty enhancement funds to elevate our school into national rankings. Held each fall, this wildly fun event has evolved into a unique golf and tennis experience that includes sports challenges, entertainment, a fantastic party, and premier live auction items. Westlake Baja proceeds continue to provide priority funding to recruit, retain and develop high-quality teachers, but grants have expanded to also support classroom needs and technology resources. Sponsorship levels range from $10,000 - $2,500. Held each spring, Gallery Night is an art-themed event that includes an evening of fun entertainment and a spectacular live and silent auction. A wonderful collaborative pairs local, professional artists with individual classrooms to provide experiential learning plus professionally inspired student art for bidding. Gallery Night proceeds enable the Foundation to fund grant requests for classroom needs, campus and gym equipment, specialized curriculum, faculty development, technology upgrades and more. Sponsorships range from $15,000 - $1,250. Enjoy the Perot family's scenic Circle T Ranch in the family-friendly, off-road Run the Ranch 5K/1K. With amazing views and an occasional cow crossing, this fundraiser provides a school-wide and DFW community event that showcases Westlake Academy and supports our students and teachers. For Westlake Academy, the Foundation’s endowment serves as a “nest egg” critical to the school’s long-term sustainability. Gifts to the endowment reflect the support and caring of our families, alumni and friends who value Westlake Academy and want it to thrive for future generations. The donated gift amounts may not be spent - only a percentage of the interest income is available for use. Our endowment currently stands at more than $1,325,000 and continues to grow as a result of new gifts, investment earnings, and contributions of 10% of Westlake Baja, Gallery Night and Run the Ranch proceeds. Each year, event sponsors and major donors are invited as special guests to the Foundation's VIP Party.
