Mission Statement
Through the love of God, Garden of Hope dedicates itself to the service and empowerment of women, men, and children affected by domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, and other forms of violence as well as the promotion of family well-being and community justice.
About This Cause
As the only linguistically and culturally competent gender-based violence victim service serving Chinese immigrant communities in all five boroughs of New York City, Garden of Hope is conscious of the growing need for services in our community. We are committed to empowering victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and human trafficking to escape their dangers situations and become self-sufficient, confident and independent. Garden of Hope (GOH) provides a comprehensive client-centered, trauma-focused support and service program for victims and their children. New York City has the largest Chinese population of any city outside of Asia; however, immigrant victims are often underserved because cultural, linguistic, socioeconomic and political barriers prevent them from seeking help. When mainstream services cannot help these victims, there is a greater chance that they will stop seeking help, continue to stay with their abusers, and suffer in silence. Our goal is to rebuild the lives of the gender violence victims by providing them with crisis intervention, counseling, case management, legal assistance, safe house, support groups, occupational trainings, parenting education, children and youth programs. With the visions of overcoming cultural, language and socioeconomic barriers and assisting Chinese immigrant women in crisis, GOH is committed to its beliefs that human rights, dignity and positive self-image are essential to all individuals and provides its services for free and in strict confidentiality. Since its establishment in 2004, GOH has effectively provided services to over three thousand Chinese immigrant victims who would not have anywhere else to turn to, and raised public awareness of violence against women, appropriate prevention, and recovery in a community where the topics of gender based violence have been considered taboo and thus ignored. Garden of Hope has a dedicated team – our board, advisory committee, and staff come from various backgrounds of professional expertise, including criminal justice, law, social work, mental health counseling, business, human services, academia, philanthropy, and religion. The team shares similar immigrant experiences and Asian-American culture. The cultural specificity and the professional diversity render Garden of Hope capable and effective in responding to the risks and needs unique to the growing immigrant population in New York.
