Namaste Charter School offers a high quality, holistic education to underserved Chicago youth. It's innovative approach maximizes students’ learning experiences by implementing a modified year-round schedule to extend academic and wellness programming.
About This Cause
Namaste's educational model has always focused on the whole child, going beyond academics and educating each student from the inside out. This year, we are taking our commitment to the next level, as we become the first school in Chicago to offer every student-facing staff member an opportunity to be certified in social-emotional learning. Namaste has a strong reputation for implementing a ground-breaking curriculum incorporating high academic standards with a focus on health and wellness—including daily physical education, morning yoga poses, and an organic lunchtime salad bar. This new training in social emotional learning will: - Elevate our practices and ensure that every teacher and staff member has the competency to appropriately address the non-academic factors that impact student success, allowing for continuity across the school. - Equip teachers with a tech-enabled platform, empowering them to gauge the emotional well-being of their class and assist in preparing students for learning. - Help students build mindfulness skills—how to relax through purposeful breath, to wake up the mind and body through stretching, and to independently take inventory of their moods and energy levels as they prepare to engage rigorous academic content. We are proud to serve as a model for other Chicago schools, and schools nationwide! At Namaste, our students carry enormous stressors with them every day they enter the classroom—from entrenched poverty, with 80% of our students qualifying for reduced or free lunch; to immigration status and deportation concerns, with 90% of our students coming from Latino households; to extreme violence, with high-levels of gun usage and gang activity plaguing city neighborhood. Social emotional learning prioritizes taking stock of each student’s emotional well-being and addressing these seemingly unmanageable problems head-on, clearing the way for students to be more present in the classroom and ensuring they are ready to learn.
