Mission Statement

Leading the fight to end hunger in Galveston County.

About This Cause

Since 2003 The Galveston County Food Bank (GCFB) has provided free, easy access to nutritious foods so people struggling financially can focus their time, energy and resources on overcoming obstacles that keep them in poverty. GCFB is the only nonprofit in Galveston County operating a centralized food distribution system providing nutritional food to other charities and directly to individuals in need. Our role is vital to the receiving, warehousing, and distribution of food with the goal of reaching the more than 58,000 Galveston County residents living with food insecurity, according to the 2023 FeedingAmerica.org report. In 2024 GCFB distributed over 10.6 million lbs. of food, equivalent to over 8.9 million meals, to 37,351 unduplicated individuals. 35% of these were children under the age of 18 and 19% were over the age of 60. GCFB Programs: 1. Agency Services - GCFB delivers to pantries, soup kitchens and residential sites. Providing free food to our partner agencies allows them to focus their efforts and resources on support services. In 2024, 19,486 unduplicated individuals were served 4.2 million pounds of food. 2. Mobile Food Distributions - delivery of fresh produce at 32 host sites located where families need help. Many cannot afford healthy food options due to rising grocery prices or to being in a food desert. 6 days a week, GCFB trucks deliver large quantities of food (up to 40k lbs. per vehicle) to locations established strategically throughout the county. In 2024, 14,568 unduplicated individuals were served. 3. Homebound Nutritional Outreach - Homebound seniors 60 and older or people with disabilities can receive food delivered to their doors by volunteers. 2024, 655 unduplicated individuals were served. 4. Children's Nutritional Outreach - To ensure children receive nutritious food, GCFB distributes through 2 programs. During the school year, in 2024 15,947 Backpack Buddies were distributed, in 45 different schools, to 673 unduplicated students identified by school personnel as struggling with hunger over the weekends or holidays, while our Kidz Pacz program is available during the summer break, at 30 different sites. In 2024 15,649 packs were distributed to 1,969 unduplicated children. GCFB programs are strengthened by a collaborative team approach. We are proud to work with over 100 partners, such as schools, churches, non-profit and community organizations throughout Galveston County.
