Mission Statement

Killer Whale Tales is a 501 (c) 3 environmental education program that uses storytelling and field based science to inspire students to take an active role in the conservation of Southern Resident Killer Whales and their habitat.

About This Cause

KWTales Mission is to engage, inspire and challenge students to take an active role in the conservation of the Southern Resident killer whales (SRKW) and the habitat that supports them, both today and as they become adults active in their communities tomorrow. Killer Whale Tales Accomplishments: We are currently booking regional elementary schools for our program offerings in school and remote. Since 2006 we have reached over 150k children throughout the habitat range of the SRKW population; from WA to CA, with most of those in the Puget Sound watershed. Over 70% of those children attend schools that are considered "in need" by the states OSPI. Every KWT presentation concludes with a request for the children to answer the following question: "Can students their age help protect these endangered whales?" The answer, and their hypothesis for the activity, is usually a resounding yes! However, since they are now officially "scientists" we ask them to go home, collect the necessary data, and see if their hypothesis is correct. A complete list of our results was submitted to the Rose Foundation in our last grant report. We feel that this sustained level of efficacy, in inspiring children, is our greatest success! We have a long history of measurables, which clearly monitor the efficacy of our programming. We have long term stable relationships with all of the leading orca researchers throughout the region, as well as vibrant and long term connections with local teachers and school districts. We are a leader in the realm of killer whale educational NGO's here in the Puget Sound and enjoy a good working relation with them as well. Our history of work is also well documented in our grant reports to the Rose Foundation. Those reports reflect how we are not only positioned to advance the work, but how we have built an organization and a network that allow us to do so. Our goal is to bring the "field trip to the classroom" by reaching approximately 8-10k school children this year. In addition to being "at-need,” many of our participating school children will also come from bilingual families and are enrolled in ESL programming at their schools. To reach as many of these students as possible, we have worked with teachers throughout the years to change/adapt our program to be as accessible as possible to all of its participants. Whether that includes highlighting key words or concepts in our story presentation, or in offering our KMAD activity in English, Spanish, or Vietnamese, we are constantly finding ways to broaden the reach of our program.
