Mission Statement
viBe Theater Experience (viBe) provides girls, young women, and nonbinary youth of color (aged 13-26) in New York City with free, high quality artistic, leadership and academic opportunities. viBe works to empower its participants to write and perform original theater, video and music about the real-life issues they face daily. viBe's performing arts and training programs provide the platform for participants to amplify their voices and "speak truth to power", by creating an artistic response to the world around them.
About This Cause
The organization began in August 2002 when a group of 8 girls wrote and performed “Say It How It Is!” a play about the issues most important to them, including misogynoir, anti-black racism, domestic violence, homophobia, social and economic justice, police brutality, grief, teenage pregnancy, and more. Today, viBe is a nationally recognized nonprofit experienced at providing a quality theater arts education that’s informed by measurable social, emotional learning (SEL) objectives & outcomes, grounded in devised theater, storytelling, and improvisation techniques, centered in racial, gender, and healing justice frameworks, and dedicated to placing girls, young women, and gender expansive youth of color at the helm of their own artistic process. viBe exists to amplify the voices of girls and young women of color through writing and performance, encouraging them to use art as a conduit for transformative justice. We are committed to the radical healing framework, which calls for collaborators to support and uplift young artists by encouraging them to express themselves authentically through the creation of individual art pieces and collaborative ensemble performances. We move the experiences of girls and young women of color from margin to center by holding space for them to advocate for change in their homes, schools, and communities as well as by providing authentic pipelines to leadership.
