Mission Statement
We Love God. We Love people. We live like Jesus—Bible Center aspires to not simply be "in" the community but be "for" the community. Through faith and action, Bible Center works to make earth a little more like Heaven. The Oasis Project is Bible Center's community outreach and economic development division. The mission of The Oasis Project is to create oases—places of peace, safety, and happiness in the midst of difficulty. Through education, employment, entrepreneurship, and improvements in the physical environment, Oasis promotes the economic mobility of low-income people.
About This Cause
The Oasis Project’s vision is that all people in Pittsburgh's Homewood neighborhood and surrounding communities will have the opportunity to flourish. Bible Center Church (BCC), founded by Ralph and Bernice Groce in 1956, was led by them until 2003. In 2004, their grandson, Dr. John Wallace, and his wife, Dr. Cynthia Wallace, took over leadership. Since 2005, BCC has focused on supporting the economic mobility of low-income people through various community initiatives. In 2011, BCC launched The Oasis Project (TOP) to address disparities in opportunities for youth and promote development in Homewood and surrounding areas. TOP focuses on education, employment, entrepreneurship, and the physical environment. BCC-TOP has acquired properties in Homewood, reactivating 40,000 square feet of commercial space and operating seven programs, including social enterprises like Everyday Cafe and Own Our Own Business Development Center. The Oasis Project's current programs include: The Maker’s Clubhouse (TMC) is TOP’s principal education program, serving children from ages 3 – 13 through a variety of high-quality programs. Out-of-School-Time programs offer STEAM (science, technology, engineering, agriculture, and math) focused educational enrichment through a 30-week after-school program for K-5th graders, a 7-week full-day summer camp (Green STEAM & Play) for both elementary and middle school age children, school-wide activities, and community events. TMC's Early Learning Center provides high-quality education and child-care services for preschool-aged children through a Montessori-inspired curriculum and year-round extended-day options. Oasis Farm (OF) is TOP’s urban farming, nutrition, and cooking program that teaches children and adults about various agricultural methods designed for urban settings. Nutrition and cooking classes focus on the connection between what is eaten and how you think, feel, and act. Community Health Assistance, Programming, & Engagement Leadership (CHAPEL) is a community-led informal mental health support program that leverages the connection between the church community and holistic well-being. CHAPEL is presented in partnership with A Second Chance, Inc. Oasis Community Kitchen (OCK) is a certified, professionally equipped, shared-use commercial kitchen and small event venue. The on-site chef is a business planning resource for beginner, intermediate, and seasoned independent entrepreneurs and provides oversight and catering for the venue and Everyday Café. Oasis Transportation Services (OTS) is a discount transportation company whose mission is, “To Transport Our Community to Opportunity.” Own Our Own (OOO) Business Development Center offers aspiring entrepreneurs comprehensive business development education and support for all entrepreneurial journey stages. OOO's guiding purpose is to help African American and other underestimated entrepreneurs build and operate successful businesses. Everyday Café (EDC) is Homewood’s premiere “third space” to meet, greet, and eat and one of TOP’s workforce development and youth employment venues.
