Mission Statement
Providing personalized education that empowers adults to succeed in our community.
About This Cause
Seeds of Literacy (Seeds) in an innovative, award-winning adult literacy program offering free, one-to-one tutoring in basic education and High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation to adults. We serve about 1,000 students annually with the help of over 350 volunteers. Unlike other adult education providers, we provide: • Individualized curricula and one-to-one instruction for each student based on their academic levels • Continuous, year-round classes with weekly registration • Flexible scheduling, with morning, afternoon, and evening classes Last year, Seeds served 951 students: 60% were women, 40% men. 76% were between the ages of 24 and 59, and 50% had dependent children. 70% were African-American, with 17% White, and 11% Hispanic/Latino. 67% entered reading below a 9th grade level, while 93% of entering students had math skills under a 9th grade level. 66% of new students lacked basic computer skills. We serve more students living in poverty than other programs. 84% of Seeds students live at or below federal poverty guidelines, as compared to 46% of those students in State-funded HSE programs in Cuyahoga County.
