Mission Statement
License to Freedom is a nonprofit community-based organization that promotes nonviolence through community education, self-sufficiency programs, and advocacy for refugee and immigrant survivors of domestic and relationship abuse, and those at risk for such violence, in the San Diego region. The organization believes that every person has a right to live without fear, and that abused refugee and immigrant women and children must be able to seek and to receive the services and support they require in a manner that is respectful of their languages, cultures, race, age, sexual orientation, disabilities and religious beliefs.
About This Cause
Since its inception in 2002 and service inauguration in 2003, L2F has served approximately 5000 immigrants and refugees in East and North County San Diego. L2F is unique in its role as a culturally and linguistically relevant entity focusing on domestic violence. L2F considers its greatest accomplishments to include the provision of support and resources to scores of women and children making lives independent of prior situations of violence; the successful development of the Community Dialogue for Change (described directly below), which provides a unique forum for the target population to explore the dynamics and challenges of life in this new society and to forge new, violence-free means of living in that context; successes in developing partnerships with Islamic leaders in San Diego County that facilitate discussion of domestic violence, and make mosques centers educating and standing against that violence; and the recent initiation of a health and wellness program serving both East and North County Immigrants and refugees to educate around quality nutrition, the importance of physical activity, and the development of healthy lifestyles in the context of modest financial resources.
