PROYECTO ITZAES

PALO ALTO, California, 94301-0000 United States

Mission Statement

The mission of Proyecto Itzaes is to provide educational resources for children and families in the predominately Maya villages of Yucatan. Proyecto Itzaes believes that the fundamental tools of literacy should be available to all. PI believes that educational resources can be provided through community service based programs and family centered learning in a way that preserves Maya cultural heritage while creating positive educational change.

About This Cause

Proyecto Itzaes provides educational resources in poor villages in Yucatan, Mexico. Programs are family-centered, multilingual: Spanish, Maya and English and include children in pre-K (lap reading), children in after-school (pre-secondary reading, computers, and environmental science), children with special education requirements, and families with health education needs (diabetes/nutrition). PI’s dream is that these fundamental capabilities can continue to be provided through efforts that supplement the public education system in the segments noted and to expand these fundamental capabilities within the target segments to additional children and families by expanding to an increasing number of villages. In this process, the Board believes local leadership needs to be developed in villages once served to provide sustainability in delivering the educational services within those villages once established and to do so responsibly and consistently without external support by PI. PI hopes that through its example other agencies and the government will take the baton and expand our vision beyond Yucatan
