Mission Statement

Funded through the non-profit Irwin & Florence Rosten Foundation, the Maps Media Institute empowers young minds through creativity, communication skills, confidence and inspiration. We are a nationally recognized after school education program that combines the best of science, technology, engineering, arts and math (STEAM) into an exciting, team building, hands on learning experience. MAPS has an amazing track record over the past 10 years of transforming and creating young people who are eager and ready to contribute and succeed in a complex communication based world. Our success record exceeds any school based program in the region in retaining and graduating 8th - 12th graders due to the supportive, creative and fun learning environment & instructors that guide our education. In 2014, MAPS was honored as one of the top 50 after-school programs in the United States by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities.

About This Cause

The MAPS Media Institute after-school program runs every year from September until May; our 32 weeks of instruction are divided into four 8 week sub-courses to allow students to participate in school activities and then return to MAPS. In addition to their proactive course work, students learn many essential life skills, among them: critical thinking, innovation, communication abilities, teamwork, problem solving, leadership etc. MAPS is a state licensed LEA (Local Education Agency), and the lead partner of a consortium of four rural, Title 1 school districts. In addition, MAPS serves faith based schools and the home school community. Our students range from 12 – 17 (8th – 12 grades) and over 50% of them qualify for free or reduced lunch. Since its inception in 2004, the program has been recognized for its high quality course offerings in the arts by local and state government officials, community schools and national arts organizations. Additionally, MAPS uniquely combines the real world of business with education. In 2005, MAPS acquired its first fee-based client and since then paying customers have included: Montana’s Office of the Governor, State Farm Insurance, the Center for Disease Control et al. In 2010, MAPS initiated its service-learning “GIVE BACK” program whereby MAPS students and staff donate their time and talent (free-of-charge) to community organizations like the Montana Hope Project, the Bitterroot Valley Youth Homes and many others. This pro-bono work yields important results for our students because giving back broadens their awareness and sensitivity to others in need.
