EAST PALO CENTER FOR COMMUNITY MEDIA

EAST PALO ALTO, California, 94303-0000 United States

Mission Statement

The East Palo Alto Center for Community Media (EPACCM) was founded in January 2003 to fill a media void in the City of East Palo Alto. When the center was created, East Palo Alto did not have a locally produced newspaper or any other community media that provided the residents with news about their city. In fulfilling its goal, the EPACCM established East Palo Alto Today, a locally produced newspaper, which became the city's first newspaper in 20 years to give residents relevant community information. Since its founding in 2006, East Palo Alto Today, also known as EPA Today, has a circulation of 8,500. It carries articles in both English and Spanish that are of particular interest to the city’s diverse population. Supplemented by its website and social media pages, EPA Today provides continuous and in-depth community news. The third media component is the Talking with Henrietta television show, which also provides area residents with reliable and critical information about the issues that impact their lives.

About This Cause

Since its founding, the EPACCM has given more than 50 residents an opportunity to work as interns at the East Palo Alto Today newspaper. Most of the interns are high school and college students, who work at the paper during the summer. During their summer employment, the interns gain important communication skills through the training they are given, which teaches them how to conduct interviews and report on news and other public events. As they learn how to write news articles and feature stories about local news makers and the issues that affect their community, they also learn more about their community, while they gain writing, web posting, photography and video skills. In the past, we've expanded our summer internship program to have the EPACCM interns produce a television news show where they provide a youthful perspective on local, state and national issues. During their show, they discuss their news stories and share the research they've gathered in their meetings with community leaders and political officials. Given the activities the center's training program provides, our interns gain the type of skills that enable them to increase their academic achievement and develop their social skills. The EPACCM is constantly seeking ways to provide a rich experience for its interns and volunteers as we provide vital information to the community. Currently, the EPACCM is interested in upgrading its computer equipment and software and expanding its training program from a summer program to one that is year-round.
