About This Cause

Mission: The National Coalition of Black Women San Francisco (NCBWSF) is an organization of progressive Women of African descent whose voice for gender equity and sociopolitical advancement drive meaningful change to benefit women of color. Focus: Chartered in 2004, the SF Chapter follows the National Coalition objectives to: (1) serve as a role model to help elevate the quality of life for young Black Women and other Black women in transition; (2) draw upon our strength as professional and volunteer women to work toward solutions on issues of concern to the contemporary Black Women; (3) serve as a communication vehicle among Black women for their own personal and professional development; and (4) collectively seek the political and economic empowerment of Black women as a means of gaining access to “mainstream America”. Key achievements: The San Francisco Chapter has 34 members who serve San Francisco City and County across four primary focus areas: health, education, employment/economic development, and leadership development. The Chapter has successfully delivered programming to an estimated 2500 plus unduplicated San Francisco residents in the past 18 years. In particular, the Chapter is the primary recipient and administrator of a CalSmart grant for Sisternomic$, reaching over 300 women in San Francisco, as well as 375 women across California, to promote financial literacy in women of color. This work requires program administration of $150,000 and schedule coordination of 25 annual events. Program leaders utilize multiple formats, to include on-line platforms and in-person delivery of eight-series sessions as well as two-hour in-depth workshops. Each presentation is tailored to the unique needs of women in San Francisco’s most underrepresented communities of color. NCBWSF’s ability to take on the complex Statewide financial literacy initiative is a culmination of other project successes, to include a Breast Cancer and African American Conference with partner Stanford Cancer Institute, and My Sister’s Keeper which are workshops that have been attended by 225 annually and led by thought leaders across multiple disciplines. The Chapter’s Doris Ward Job Training program has served over 260 women since 2011 in San Francisco (with a 60% employment rate). The program engages unemployed/underemployed women and provides a $25.00/hour stipend for program participation. Each community program requires extensive awareness activity to drive enrollment in the sometimes hard-to-reach communities.
